Demonstrations on water saving technologies
Ludhiana, May 27 Engineers from the Department of Farm Power and Machinery of the College of Agricultural Engineering demonstrated to the farmers the usefulness and purposefulness of this Rs.4,50,000 instrument made available to Punjab Agricultural University by CIMMYT (International Wheat and Maize Research Centre), Mexico City. Dr Gill pointed out that KVK would prepare two fields side by side, one levelled with ordinary implements and the other with the help of laser land
leveller, before sowing a crop. Their comparative yields and performance will be compared. Only after the feedback and field trials which are part of the collaborative research project between PAU and farmers, the university would formally recommend the use of this land leveller after appropriate modifications in the same. The farmers were given live demonstrations on the use of bed maker-cum-planter, multi-crop planter and pulverising roller. Agricultural engineer Dr Jaskaran Singh said that it was very handy when crops recommended for sowing on beds are to be sown by the farmers, as along with making of the beds, seed is also sown simultaneously. Bed planting reduces water requirement by about 30 per cent and gives better crop yield, improves the drainage in case of heavy rains and saves water sensitive crops.. On the other hand, multi crop planter is useful for precision sowing for crops like groundnut, soybean, maize, cotton and sunflower. The pulverising roller is an attachment commonly used with cultivator. It costs around Rs 5,000. Dr Gill said proper use of water saving technologies, including transplanting paddy after June 15 and farm machinery, can help farmers gain in production and incomes. This would change the present “grim picture of the agriculture”. Another interesting implement was crop transplanter for transplanting use in vegetables and other crops on beds or even in flat field. PAU has already gifted a laser land leveller to Sandhora village Cooperative Society of Moga district for custom hiring. The head of the farm power and machinery Dr S.S.Ahuja assured the farmers the end users of the farm implements and also being at the cutting-edge that any suggested improvements would be carried out to make the implements more field-worthy and cost effective. |
