PU to make environment subject must for undergraduates
Chandigarh, May 21 The Syndicate will consider allowing lateral entry to Chandigarh College of Engineering and Technology from diploma to second year at the degree level. A committee constituted for the purpose recommended that lateral entry from diploma to second year of the degree level to only those students who have completed plus two senior secondary examination with physics and mathematics. In addition, there is a requirement of the AICTE that the candidate must have obtained 60 per cent marks in the aggregate in the diploma course. The admission will be made on merit obtained in an entrance test to be conducted by the university. Syndics would also consider withdrawing affiliation to MA I (economics) granted to D D Jain Memorial College for Women, Ludhiana, since no students had been admitted to the course. Interestingly, the Syndics will be granting extension to provisional affiliation to a host of courses for which students had already appeared in the examinations. Members will also consider taking action against the examiner who gave zero marks to three MA (II year) history candidates whom the re-evaluators gave substantial marks. Three candidates were given a zero by the first examiner following which during re-evaluation the marks were increased to 33, 20 and 33, respectively. The third examiner gave the same students 24, 26, and 32 marks, respectively. Since the difference was substantial, the Vice-Chancellor asked a fourth evaluator to look at the answer sheets who also reached a conclusion similar to the II and III evaluator. The university has also proposed to change the name of the masters in mass communication Course to MA in journalism and mass communication. The number of seats too has been proposed to be increased from the existing 30+10 to 40 +10 (NRI). The taking over the building of the Home Science College at Kauni Village in Muktsar district will also come up for discussion during the Syndicate meeting. The college was initially being run by the Punjab Agriculture University (PAU), Ludhiana, and had been lying abandoned for the past many years. The area where the building is located falls under the jurisdiction of PU. A recommendation to this effect has been forwarded to the Punjab Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development, Mr Jagmohan Singh Kang. The Syndics will also approve the giving of additional charge of the post of Director, Professor of Swami Sarvanand Giri, PU Regional Centre, Bajwara (Hoshiarpur) to Dr B.S. Sohi, Director, Professor, UIET, PU. |
Deprived of roll numbers, 100 stage protest
Panchkula, May 21 The centre superintendents informed the police following which Mr Balbir Singh, Superintendent of the Panchkula Police, reached the spot. The candidates, who came from far-flung areas of the state, raised slogans against the commission authorities and alleged that they had to suffer due to the sheer negligence of the management. The irate candidates alleged that the commission barred them from taking tests by not issuing roll numbers. Inder Singh and Sarjant Singh from Jind and Rajendra Kumar and Surinder Kumar from Narwana alleged that though they had submitted their documents in time yet the commissioner did not issue them roll numbers. Even this morning, the authorities refused them roll numbers they alleged. Pradeep Kumar was shocked when he received a wrong roll number. He reached the office for its correction and in the process got late. He was turned out of the examination hall as he was late by over 15 minutes. While contacted the commission Chairman, Brig. (retd.) M.L Punia, claimed that roll numbers were sent well in advance to every candidates. Those who could not get their roll number in time due to any reason should have contacted the commission office on time, he said. He also claimed that the commission office even provided roll numbers to certain candidates who contacted the dealing hand officials in time on Saturday evening. |
3 Punjab policemen proclaimed offenders, still at large
Chandigarh, May 21 However, in what can only be an instance of men in khakhi extending help to their counterparts in a neighbouring state, the Panchkula police has done precious little to nab the three personnel. Not only this, when the man on whose complaint the three cops were declared POs, and his family members approached the Panchkula police with request for action in the matter, they were told to catch the erring cops and bring them to Panchkula. The facts of the case are simple. On August 9, 1993, Mr Amra Ram, an employee of the Department of Posts and Telegraph, was picked up by a team from Banur (Patiala) police station. Despite pleas of the victim, his family members and the employees of the P&T department, the cops reused to give the reasons behind the arrest. "When we went to the police station, we saw that our father had been tortured. He could barely move. But, we were still not allowed to talk to him. All what we were told was that he would be sent back soon," informs Mr Naresh Kumar, son of Mr Amra Ram. It finally took a warrant officer, sent by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on the plea of the family of the victim, to get Amra Ram rescued from the clutches of the cops. Thereafter, in September 1993, Mr Amra Ram filed a criminal complaint against the personnel who had picked him up. Taking up the complaint, a Panchkula court summoned the three cops - Gurchain Singh, then SHO, police station, Banur, Prem Singh, then ASI, posted at police station, Banur, and Kartar Singh, then head constable posted at the same police station. However, they failed to appear in court. Not only this, even subsequent bailable warrants, non-bailable warrants to be served through the DGP, Punjab, failed to elicit any response from the accused and they allegedly continued to play games with the judicial system. Ultimately, the Judicial Magistrate (First Class), Panchkula, declared the three accused to be POs. But, nothing has been done till date. According to Mr Naresh Kumar, the police inaction is all the more baffling as the matter has been brought to the notice of the DGP, Haryana, as well as the DGP, Punjab. "When we approached the Panchkula police wing, which is mandated the task of arresting POs, we were told that only an officer of the rank of DSP or above can arrest the accused as one of them is an inspector. Thereafter, it was even suggested to us that we catch the accused and hand them over to the police," says Mr Naresh Kumar. When contacted, Mr Balbir Singh, Superintendent of Police, Panchkula, while acknowledging that the matter is in his notice, claimed no action had been taken as the complainant had not provided a certified copy of the court orders to the police. "We have told him to get warrants from the court. Once he does it, we will do the needful," the Superintendent of Police said. |
