Gobind pips Nikhil

Gobind outclassed Nikhil Singla 25-00 in boys’ sub-junior singles (1st round) on the opening day of the ninth St Stephen’s Carrom Ranking Tournament held at St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, here, today. Gunjan gave a one-sided affair defeat to Rangoli 25-00 in the girls’ junior singles event.

ONGC thrash SCCl in hockey

Chandigarh, May 17
The hosts ONGC thrashed the SCCL team 6-0 in the opening match of the four-day Public Sector Hockey Tournament which started at Hockey Stadium, Sector 42, today.

In the one-sided affair, the players of ONGC dominated the proceedings from the start of the game as they forced first penalty stroke in the eighth minute. Mohamad Fahad capitalised on the chance and opened their account.

The SCCL suffered the next jolt in the very next minute as Fahad struck again to send the ball home through a field goal.

The next four goals came through Rajdeep(14 min), Prabhjot(31 min), Amarjit(36 min) and Vivek Gupta (37 min).

Displaying brilliant stick work, ONGC also earned three penalty corners but none could be converted.

In the second match between BSNL and MTNL, the BSNL team got the better of the latter 6-0. The score could have been much higher if the six penalty corners forced by BSNL had not gone wasted. All six goals netted by BSNL were field goals.

The main scorer was Jaspal Sorenj who scored three goals(13, 32 and 40 mins) followed by M.A. Vinod Kumar(two goals-24 and 26 mins) and Premjit(one goal-46 min).

Earlier, the tournament was inaugurated by former Olympian Tarlochan Singh Bawa.

St John’s u-13 cricket from May 20

Chandigarh, May 17
The St John’s Cricket Academy will organise the first Hot Weather St John’s U-13 Cricket Cup from May 20 to 28 at St John’s grounds, Sector 8.

Eight leading schools and academies of the region have confirmed their participation in this tournament.

The tournament will be played on a league-cum-knockout basis. Teams have been divided into two pools. Pool A consists of the St John’s Cricket Academy (A), St Anne’s High School, Mohali Tigers and Guru Nanak Public School while Pool B consists of the St John’s Cricket Academy (B), the St Soldier’s Cricket Academy, Panchkula, the Vivek High Asian Cricket Academy and ICL Eleven.

All league matches will be of 30 overs, semifinals of 35 overs and the final of 40 overs. The first match will be played between the St John’s Cricket Academy (B) and the Vivek High Asian Cricket Academy and will start at 7 am on May 20. Ms P. Cheema, Principal of St John’s High School will inaugurate the tournament. the semifinals will be played on May 27 and the final on May 28.

Kanpur Area beat Deviali 4-3

Chandigarh, May 17
Kanpur Area registered a 4-3 win over Deviali Area via tie-breaker on the second day of the inter-area hockey championship of the Maintenance Command, Air Force, held at 3 Base Repair Depot, Air Force, here today.

Though Deviali made a couple of good moves and took lead in the 18th minute through a field goal by Sgt Vijay Kumar. But it could not sustain the pressure of Kanpur Area in the dying minutes as Sgt Rajvir Singh scored the equaliser in the 43rd minute.

The decision came through tie breaker where Deviali lost the match 4-3. Cpl Mukul, Sgt H. Singh and Sgt Rajvir Singh scored for the winners while AC Gaurav and AC K.G. Singh executed twice for the losers. TNS

8 chemist shops raided

Mohali, May 17
Raids were conducted on eight chemist shops by a Drug Inspector and intoxicating drugs which were allegedly being misused seized. Of the eight shops, three were located in Mohali , three at Kurali and one each at Bharatgarh and Kiratpur Sahib.

Mr Pardeep Kumar , Drug Inspector, said the raids started yesterday and continued today. He said from Bansal Medical Store in Phase IIIB 2 here, 59 bottles of corex were seized. Besides, from Gupta Medical Store in Phase I here, 21 bottles of corex, 11 bottles of phensedyl and nine bottles of planokuf were seized. From Veerjee Medicos in Phase IIIB2, various samples of medicines ,which were not for sale, were seized.

The Drug Inspector said the total cost of the medicines seized was about Rs 4,500 . The raids were conducted on the directions of Dr G.L. Goel , Director, Health Services.
