Three militants among 4 killed

Srinagar, April 10
Four persons, including three militants, were killed, while troops seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition in Jammu and Kashmir today, a defence spokesman said.

Troops killed two foreign militants of the Talibani group at Sukhnai village in the Waryan area of Doda district today in an encounter.

The slain militants were identified as Mustakin and Commando, both residents of Pakistan, the spokesman said, adding an AK-56 rifle and a pistol were seized from them.

The security forces shot dead a Hizbul Mujahideen militant, Fayaz Ahmad, after a brief encounter at Ahmadabad village in the Kulgam area of Anantnag district early today, he said.

The encounter ensued after a search party was attacked by the militants, the spokesman added.

The police recovered the body of Sabzar Ahmad Gatoo from Bijbehara in South Kashmir today.

He said the security forces seized 400 kg of explosive material, 30 IEDs, 25 detonators, six AK-47 rifles, three UBGL launchers, 20 UBGL grenades, 4 hand grenades, six magazines, one radio set, one gunny bag of Russian primers for IEDs and 300 rounds of AK rifles from the house of Abdul Salam Wani at Lullipora village in the Pattan area of North Kashmir during a search operation followed by a tip off.

The house owner was arrested and handed over to Pattan police station, the spokesman said.

He said the information revealed that these arms, ammunition and explosives were brought recently to cause disruption in the April 24 byelections in the Pattan constituency of Baramula district. — UNI

15 in fray in 3 constituencies
Tribune News service

Srinagar, April 10
On the last day of withdrawal of nomination papers today, only 15 candidates have been left in the fray for the three Assembly constituencies going to the poll in Baramula district on April 24.

The main contest would be between the National Conference and the PDP, while its Congress ally has not fielded any candidate in any of the three constituencies for the coalition candidates.

Of the 15 candidates, seven are contesting the Sangrama seat and four each Pattan and Rafiabad constituencies. The PDP has fielded Javed Ahmad Beigh, a nephew of Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Hussain Beigh from the Sangrama constituency, much to the resentment of a section of the PDP led by former minister Ghulam Hassan Mir.

The opposition National Conference did not field its candidate from the constituency and decided to support the Independent candidate, Shoaib Lone, a son of the slain former minister, Dr Ghulam Nabi Lone, of the PDP, which led to the vacancy. Others in the fray include Sonaullah Beigh of the Panthers Party, Javed Qureshi of the RLD and three Independents, Zafrullah Beigh, Abdul Rehman Lone and Ghulam Mohammad Bhat.

There is going to be a direct contest between the candidates of the PDP and the National Conference in the Rafiabad and Pattan constituencies. The former National Conference MLA who quit the party and the Assembly to join the ruling PDP, Mr Dilawar Mir, is pitted against the NC’s Mohammad Maqbool Mir from the Rafiabad constituency. There are two other Independent candidates, Mohammad Maqbool War and Abdul Khaliq Sheikh.

In the Pattan constituency, the NC has fielded its former minister, Dr Mustafa Kamaal, who is pitted against Moulvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari of the PDP.
