One held with smack: The Tanda police, on a tip-off, arrested Paramjit Singh, alias Pamma, alias Ghuggi, a resident of ward No 3 under Sections 21, 61 and 85 of NDPS Act on Sunday. According to the police sources, 3 grams of smack was recovered from him.NAWANSHAHR
Grant sought: Mr Surinder Mohan Tejpal, member, Government-Aided Private School Managements’ Association, Punjab, in a statement here on Sunday urged the Chief Minister to release grants for infrastructure development under the Sarv Sikhiya Abhiyan to government-aided privately managed schools also. He said with the release of funds under the scheme, the pace of infrastructure development in the government schools had picked up. Privately managed government-aided schools, which have also made a significant contribution, and have been receiving 95 per cent grant from the government, should also be brought under the purview of the Sarv Sikhiya Abhiyan, he said. Veteran wins laurels: Mr Gurbhajan Singh Bains (66), a retired post-master and a resident of Moela Wahidpur village, has won silver medals in 200 metres and 800 metres and a bronze medal in 1500 metres at the 26th Punjab Masters Athletics Championship organised by the District Masters Athletics Association, Amritsar, at Guru Nanak Dev University recently.

Seminar on TB awareness: A seminar on 'generating awareness about TB, AIDS and drug abuse through entertainment' was organised at a nursing school here on Saturday. Dr Surinder Singla, a TB and chest diseases specialist at the local Civil Hospital, delivered a lecture while Mr Ved Parkash, a magician from Chandigarh, created awareness about TB through his magic tricks. Among those present were Mr Shiv Arya, director of the nursing school; and Mr Jagroop Singh and Mr Jaswinder Singh, both from District TB Control Society, Sangrur.
