People educated on brain diseases
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, March 14
“Brain Awareness Week”, organised to educate the common man about various problems of the brain, was inaugurated by Prof J.S. Chopra, former Director Principal, Government Medical College, Head of Department of Neurology, at the New OPD Block, PGIMER, yesterday.

People were educated about common brain diseases like stroke (brain attack) and multiple sclerosis through interactive sessions, posters and multimedia presentations.

Patients of epilepsy of all ages were examined and common myths related to the disease were dealt with.

“Spasticity camps” were conducted by physiotherapists and neurologists to teach caretakers how to care and rehabilitate spastic patients.

Information regarding common and uncommon headaches, brain fever, head injury, spinal cord injury was given in the form of brochures and leaflets. The highlight of the event was a multiple sclerosis patient meet wherein patients of multiple sclerosis from the region had gathered to discuss their problems.

They shared their experiences with the doctors and other patients. Queries from patients and their relatives were also answered by the experts.

This was one of the initial attempts by the PGIMER to form a support group of patients with multiple sclerosis. For the first time, multimedia presentations on diseases were screened at the OPD.

Dr Dhiraj Khurana of the Department of Neurology said short documentaries were prepared to facilitate understanding of various diseases.

“They know exactly what symptoms to look for and what can happen in case the symptoms are treated casually,” he said. While public was educated about symptoms to recognise a stroke, they were told to avail the facility of dialing stroke hotline No. 9815615600 in case of emergency.

“We have a stroke team in place to deal with cases. In case they inform us on the hotline, our team can get on with treatment immediately after the patient arrives. Every minute counts when you are saving a brain and treatment is effective if given within three hours of the stroke,” Dr Khurana explained.

In case of a stroke, public was told to take the patient to a hospital that had CT scan facility.

Going to a hospital lacking a CT scan served no purpose and resulted in wastage of precious time, the doctors opined.

The function was attended by dignitaries of the PGI Neurological Society and other medical faculty members.
