Kol Dam workers strike work
Sundernagar, March 7 These workers were working at the structure of the desilting chamber. They were busy tying iron rods when hundreds of rods fell on them suddenly. Four workers died on the spot and three others were injured. Only seven workers were working at the time of the accident as the rest of the workers had gone for lunch break. Usually 200 persons work at the site. Interestingly, the NTPC is celebrating National Safety week nowadays, which started on March 4. According to the Public Relation Officer, Kol Dam Hydro Project, Mr K.M. Parshant, the bodies have been dispatched to the native places of the victims. Two victims belonged to Jharkhand, one to Bihar and the fourth victim was from Sundernagar. |
Bali demands CBI inquiry into power project review
Shimla, March 7 Addressing a press conference here today, Mr Bali, whose name figured in the charge sheet prepared by the BJP, said by opposing the biggest project in terms of foreign direct investment — the Himalayan Ski Village — the BJP had proved that it was anti-Himachal and against the interests of the unemployed. “I will write to the Chief Minister to order a CBI inquiry into the decisions of the BJP regime regarding the Karcham-Wangtoo project, approving the escalated cost of the Baspa project from Rs 950 crore to about 1,550 crore, and details of the funds received for the Vivekanand hospital at Palampur,” he said. He added that he would file a defamation case for the charges levelled against him in the charge sheet. He announced that the government would review the clause of exclusivity in the memorandum of understanding signed between the BJP government and M/S Himachal Helicopter Skiing as these were detrimental to the growth of the area. “The BJP, which is crying hoarse about giving exclusivity rights to Ford, had given such rights to the heli-skiing company for 30 years,” he stated. Mr Bali clarified that the government had signed the memorandum of understanding approved by the Cabinet for the Himalayan Ski Village and a final decision would be taken on the basis of merits and demerits of the project. “The government has conveyed its concern to the Himalayan Ski Village company and a final decision will be taken after it submits its detailed project report,” he said. He added that the government was not opposed to the deities, but was against those who were using the deities for their political interests. |
Kangra bypass declared scheduled road
Kangra March 7 Disclosing this here today, the Executive Engineer, PWD, Mr P.C. Palia, said following the declaration of the 4.6-km-long Kangra bypass road as a scheduled road, no constructions would be allowed within 5 metres on both sides of the road. This part of the land on both sides of the road was known as controlled width under the India Road Control Act. He said corridors on both sides of the road would be constructed and left free from the service utility too. He said sewerage pipes, water pipes and telephone cables would not be allowed to be laid in the corridor area and even the erection of electricity poles would not be allowed. He said constructions on the encroached land within the controlled width of this bypass would face demolitions without compensation. He said the constructions on private land falling in the controlled width would also be demolished against compensation. According to sources, more than 30 constructions were to be demolished which fall within the control width. Mr Palia said the bypass would be constructed at a cost of Rs 4 crore and would be ready by December-end. |
Kaul Singh threatens to sue Dhumal
Shimla, March 7 He told mediapersons that since the charge sheet in which baseless allegations had been made to malign his image was released under the signatures of former Chief Minister P.K. Dhumal and state BJP chief Suresh Bharadwaj, he was sending notices, giving a week’s time to them to make amends, failing which he would file a criminal case as well as a civil suit to claim damages. He said he had neither any plot at Bhiuli, nor any shops at Sipli khud and Pandoh, as alleged in the charge sheet. He added that his son was not registered as contractor with the Irrigation and Public Health Department and as such, the question of obliging him with contracts did not arise. |
Hostellers feeling insecure
Palampur, March 7 According to a press note issued by the Student Central Association here today, the hostel fence had been broken by the authorities to make way for the entry of JCB machines and it had not been repaired. It was also stated that postgraduate students at the hostel could not avail themselves of the facilities of university library and laboratories as the hostel as it was not possible for girls to go the library during late hours. Girl students demanded that the new hostel proposed on the campus be located so as to make the library and laboratories accessible to students during late hours. The girls had been feeling suffocation as the hostel was housing students double its capacity. They said the food provided at the hostel was unhygienic and unhealthy. The girl students resented the attitude of the higher authorities as no action had been taken about their demands despite repeated reminders. |
CM announces reward for 292 panchayats
Shimla, March 7 Replying to a question by Mr Mahender Singh, Mr Virender Kanwar and Mr Ramesh Chaudhary during question hour in the Assembly today, the Chief Minister assured that Rs 10 lakh would be given in two instalments. “It is a pro-public posture that the government has taken, which even the members of the Opposition must appreciate and should not raise doubts,” he opined. The MLAs wanted to know by when would the government release the money to the panchayats and would it be besides the routine money allotted to them for development work. “The second instalment of the reward would be given once the utilisation certificate for the work undertaken with half the money was submitted,” said Mr Sat Mahajan, Rural Development Minister. He also clarified that the panchayats where the pradhan and the members had been elected unopposed but the election for the uppradhan had to be held would not get the reward. “In 1995 the reward money was merely Rs 20,000, which was raised to Rs 1 lakh in 2001 and finally to Rs 10 lakh last year,” he informed the House. In reply to another question on behalf of the Power minister, who was not in the House, the IPH Minister, Mr Kaul Singh Thakur, said the government would revise the old labour laws and enhance the penalty for violating these laws. He was replying to a question by Mr Jai Ram Thakur on the failure of the companies executing the power projects to give 70 per cent employment to Himachalis. — TNS |

Shimla, March 7 Scrutiny of nomination papers would take place on March 18 and the last date for withdrawal would be March 20. Polling would be held on March 28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Vidhan Sabha complex and counting would take place the same day. The process would be completed by March 31, 2006. |
Kokje to inaugurate Holi festival
Palampur, March 7 Besides, the administration had decided to organise four cultural nights from March 12 to March 15. Artistes from New Delhi and other parts of the country had been invited to entertain the crowd. He said Chief Minister Virbhadara Singh would perform the closing ceremony of Holi festival on March 15. |
Body of labourer found
Kangra, March 7 Ms Bindoo Sachedeva, Subdivisional Police Officer, Dehra, said that Kishori Lal was working at the house of his brother and had consumed liquor on Sunday evening before he left for his home in village Choant. His body was spotted yesterday by a passerby, who informed the village pradhan, and who in turn informed the police. The body was sent for post-mortem examination. The preliminary autopsy report mentioned rib injury and death due to shock, Ms Sachedeva said today. She said it seemed that after consuming liquor, he might have fallen, resulting in his death. However, the police was investigating the case. |
