City boy excels in soccer
Chandigarh, March 5 Telling about his experience, Maria said, "Like any other sportsperson, it was my dream to represent the country but I did not expect it to come so early. My joy knew no bounds when I was selected in the Indian football squad and it was an awesome experience". Maria happens to be the first player from Chandigarh to be inducted into the senior national football team. Started his career as footballer in 1995 and represented Chandigarh in junior nationals and never looked back after that. Chandigarh got recognition due to his achievement in national scale and the home team got affiliated to the All-India Football Association in 1996. In 1999, he got a job with AG Haryana at Chandigarh under the sports quota. This six-foot tall stout defender came to limelight in 2003, when he appeared for the All -India Inter AG Audit Football Tournament held at Chandigarh, where the West Bengal state coach, accompanying the AG Bengal team, spotted him. He offered Maria a stint with Mohan Bagan Club. Describing his initial experience with Mohan Bagan, he said, "When I got a chance to play in the Kolkata Club I was put in the B team. It was a challenge for me to prove my worth and during the practice session with A team, in the last five minutes, I scored two goals. The day changed my fortune and I got my seat reserved in the playing 11 of the Indian Football squad." Maria lately was in the Indian squad for the Asia Cup Qualifier match against Yemen at Delhi on March 1, 2006. "In India, it seems the greater challenge is for the nation's footballers to win an equal level of respect in their homeland. The game still struggles for government support, as yet there is no coordinated strategy to support the development of football in India, and big business houses stand distant. Without the support of both, India will struggle to achieve its full potential," said Maria remorsefully. |
