Demolitions suspended as violence erupts
Gurgaon, February 25 About 100 persons led by a Councillor of the Municipal Council, Ram Niwas Sharma, pelted the demolition squad with stones. The authorities stopped the action when violence erupted. However, about a dozen houses had been razed by then. According to one officer on the spot, the demolition had been stopped temporarily. In the stone-pelting incident, a JCB was damaged. Three workers relating to the operation of the JCB have received injuries. The police have registered a case against the councillor and others in connection with the
violence. The demolitions were carried out under the Controlled Area Act and the Haryana Municipal Act, 1973. The illegal colonisation in Sanjay Gram was done in an area falling in the land of Gurgaon village and was outside the Lal Dora. The entire operation of demolition was done under the supervision of the City Magistrate, Gurgaon, Mr Ajay Malik, who was acting as Duty Magistrate. Top local officials of the Municipal Council and the DTP Enforcement were also present on the occasion. Initially about a dozen police personnel accompanied the demolition squad. However, when the news of violence spread, police reinforcement was brought to the spot. An officer of the rank of DSP also rushed to the spot. |
Delhi Master Plan 2021 to be notified soon
New Delhi, February 25 Minister of State for Urban Development Ajay Maken today said a meeting of all Delhi MPs, leaders of all parties in Delhi Assembly and MCD would be convened by the ministry on February 27, where all issues would be discussed before the plan was finalised and notified. The government had decided to allow private individuals and organisations to pool land up to 3,000 sq m and construct high-rise apartments, subject to building bye-laws and safety requirements. 25 per cent of the total land would have to be left open and parking too would have to be accommodated within the plot, he said. The idea was to involve private parties along with state agencies in helping fulfil the residential needs of the Capital, he added. The challenge before the government was to re-develop the city as there was no more space for new development any more, the minister said. Mr Maken has recently taken charge of all Delhi-related bodies — Delhi Development Authority, Municipal Corporation of Delhi and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation — in the ministry. Meeting of the five-member Tejinder Khanna committee, constituted by the Centre earlier this month to look into the issues of violation of building bye-laws, the current phase of demolitions and what best could be done to provide relief to the people of Delhi, would also meet on February 28. The high-level committee, headed by former Delhi Lieutenant Governor Tejinder Khanna, comprises of MLAs Dr Harsh Vadhan (BJP) and Dr S C Vats (Cong) and two technical experts Saiyyad Safi and E Ruberio. Meanwhile, the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president Mr Ram Babu Sharma has constituted a 17-member committee to gather suggestions from party workers to be placed before the five-member committee, headed by former Lt. Governor of Delhi Mr Tejinder Khanna, appointed by the Union Urban Development Ministry to look into the issue of unauthorised constructions in the Capital. The committee appointed by the DPCC president will also receive suggestions from party workers and a cross section of people representing all strata of society about the new Master Plan to be formulated by the government. The first meeting of the committee will be held on February 27. The following are members in the 17-member committee: Mr Jagdish Tytler, MP, Mr Sajjan Kumar, MP, Mrs Krishna Tirath, MP, Mr Sandeep Dikshit, MP, Mr R K Anand, MP, Mrs Tajdar Babar, MLA, Mr Shiv Charan Gupta, Ex-MP, Mr Subhash Chopra, MLA, Mr Vijay Singh Lochav, MLA, Mr Surender Kumar, MLA, Mr Veer Singh Dhingan, MLA, Mr Kunwar Karan Singh, MLA, Mr Shadi Ram, MLA, Mr Rajesh Jain, MLA, Mr Bhisham Sharma, Mr Tarwinder Singh Marwah, MLA and Mr Prem Chand Gadodia, Chairman, Traders’ Cell, DPCC. |
MCD bulldozers continue to rumble down MG Road
New Delhi, February 25 MCD bulldozers tore down Paliwal buildings on the upmarket street and continued to demolish 13, MG in Lal Dora, taking the total number of unauthorised constructions against which action had been taken to cross 1,400. The civic body had earlier demolished 1 and 2 MG, which housed outlets of some of the best known fashion designers of the country, prompting them to move the High Court seeking a stay which it declined. The MCD also took action against 17 illegal residential and commercial constructions in all the 12 zones of the capital. It targeted 13 residential and four commercial structures. Meanwhile, hundreds of traders affiliated to more than 80 market associations of west Delhi downed shutters and staged a demonstration today to protest government moves to demolish illegal constructions. Shops in the area remained shut for the first half of the day because of the two-hour protest at Raja Garden chowk. The traders say the government should not treat the Master Plan of Delhi as a “holy book” since the livelihood of five lakh traders and more than 25 lakh employees is at stake because of the demolition drive. “Sealing of shops in residential areas, demolition drive of MCD, demolition notice for Chabutras in Chandni Chowk, Khari Baoli and Sadar Bazar markets and sealing of shops in Pitampura, Rohini and other areas has spread panic among traders,” Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) secretary general Praveen Khandelwal said. Delhi Traders Sangharsh Morcha convenor Ramesh Khanna said a Delhi Trade Bandh has been called on March 1. The traders will also march to Parliament that day to demand the Centre’s immediate intervention in the matter. BJP MP from Delhi Vijay Kumar Malhotra, state BJP president Dr Harsh Vardhan, former Chief Minister Madan Lal Khurana, Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Jagdish Mukhi and in MCD Mr Subhash Arya also joined the demonstration. |
‘Metro to reach Faridabad, Sonipat’
Gurgaon, February 25 Mr Dev was here to inaugurate the two-day flower show organised by Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) at the Leisure Valley Park, Sector 29 today. Speaking to mediapersons later, Mr Dev added that the Haryana government spoke at a high level and expressed its intention to link the metro train to Gurgaon, Faridabad and Sonipat. Financing the project is not a problem for the state government, added Mr Dev.
As far as the controversy of route to Gurgaon is concerned, Mr Dev clarified that two routes — one from Mehrauli Road via Qutab Minar and second from Dwarka via Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) to Palam Vihar — are being studied. Metro train via Qutab Minar has been put on hold, not suspended, as the Archaeological Survey of India had objected to its route near the historical monument, added the
officer. The Chairman-cum-Managing Director, National Buildings Construction Corporation Limited (NBCCL), Mr Arup Roy Choudhury, who also accompanied Mr Dev, revealed that the NBCCL was considering building low-cost housing facilities for the masses in Gurgaon. Mr Choudhury added that NBCCL had already built 826 apartments for government employees in Kolkata. On the same pattern, we might build a number of flats in the city, added the Chairman, NBCCL. The administrator, HUDA, Mr S P Gupta, informed that more than 1,400 participants took part in the flower show competition in the city. The flower show has become an annual feature of the department which attracts a good number of visitors. |
Politicians cash in on shopkeepers’ hopes
Faridabad, February 25 They have allegedly started brokering on the issue, raising hope that the built-up shops and houses would not be demolished. Meanwhile, the shopkeepers of some of the markets, including the Sectors 7 and 10 here, have decides to go on indefinite strike to protest against the demolition action. The administration has identified several hundred shops functioning ‘illegally’ in the Housing Board colonies here. The shopkeepers of Sectors- 7 and 10 here (Housing Board), who pulled down their shutters in protest against the sealing and demolition of the shops, held a meeting which was addressed by some local politicians. These political activists reportedly assured the shopkeepers that they would speak to the Chief Minister about the issue and not let the administration close down the market which, they claimed, had been existing for decades. It is learnt that one such politician had also spoken to the Chief Minister and asked the Deputy Commissioner here to delay the action in public interest. He also assured the protesters that their demands would be dealt with properly. An interesting aspect here is that some of the politically active persons themselves have been allegedly involved in encroachments and illegal commercial activities. According to a local shopkeeper, cash contributions leading to a few crores had also been collected by some politically influential persons from the shopkeepers in this market, with the promise of getting the market regularized. The owners of the HUDA markets in the nearby sectors have demanded closure of all illegal shops or markets. An RWA member alleged that politicians had always abetted illegal activities like encroachments or commercialization of residential areas. |

Noida, February 25 Bharat Bhushan has been running from pillar to post but of no avail. Now he has taken recourse to Right to Information Act for the possession of plot No. C-199, in Sector-10, Noida. The allottee had completed all formalities and requirements for getting the physical possession of the plot long back. His brother Rajesh Thakkur said the plot has actually been under the possession of somebody else, which the authority has failed to get vacated. Although successive chief executive officers of Noida Authority have issued orders for vacating the plot, nothing has come of them. The man illegally occupying the plot has been offered a plot elsewhere by the Authority, but he has rejected the offer. Even the anti-encroachment squads have failed to take action despite orders from the authority. Former CEO Avinish Awasthi had assured Thakkur that the plot would be vacated soon, but Awasthi himself was transferred from Noida shortly thereafter.
