Evening Studies set for overhaul
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, February 25
Mired in controversies for various reasons, the Department of Evening Studies, Panjab University, which will now undergo a complete change in character to serve the students better, has raised the hopes of many.

According to a university committee, the admissions for 2005-06 were significantly lower than the average for most of the courses. The gulf between the sanctioned strength and the actual intake widened further in admissions for 2005-06 resulting in considerable slack. The committee, however, attributed this drop in admissions to a more demanding certificate of employment.

The committee report also mentioned that on December 23, 2005, a surprise visit was made to the department and scores of students were found roaming in and around the lobby. In addition to this, three classes were being held with just one student in a particular class (Urdu) and several staff members (over 15) were crammed into a single suffocating room. The members also reported that there was no space for reading in the library.

With 39 faculty members in the department, the committee found that there were only a handful of genuine employees taking admission to the department. As such the committee keeping in view the sorry state of affairs in the department suggested various recommendations pertaining to both the delivery as well as organisational aspect. However, according to a Senate member, the department is a multi-faculty department and the recommendations have to be made accordingly.

Meanwhile, the committee has proposed a broad-based board of control which suggests that all subjects should be represented by at least one teacher and has also removed the employment clause. The committee also found out that the proportion of successful candidates was not very high and the potent reasons that come to fore accounting for the failure is the practise of missing classes and concentration of faculty resources on PG classes. The committee suggested that all teachers may be asked to submit their completed registers periodically to office, enabling to prepare the tabulated statement for putting on the notice board. The restructuring of the department, according to the committee, will also require the adherence to work load in terms of UGC stipulations.
