1 dead, 10 hurt in factory fire
Panipat, December 26 The condition of one of the injured is stated to be critical. The district administration has instructed the police to get the site inspected by the Industrial Safety Department to ascertain the exact cause of the explosion. Suraj, who received injuries all over his body, was declared brought dead at Bhim Sain Sachhar Hospital. The injured — Manoj, Ravi Biswas, Santosh Kumar, Raju, Chandan, Rajesh, Chander Bhan and Kanak Kumar were admitted to the government hospital whereas two others, Sirajudin and Manoranjan, were admitted to Jindal Nursing Home. When this reporter visited the site at 2.15 pm, fire engines from Panipat and Samalakha were trying to control the fire caused by the explosion, which took place at around 1 pm. According to eyewitnesses at the factory, manufacturing carpets, the fire was difficult to control. Workers were reportedly using the petrol gun for their work when suddenly fire broke out and spread due to the presence of large cans filled with petrol. An injured worker said Suraj, who died in the accident, was working near the petrol cans. The fire took place in the main workplace of the factory. Fiberglass sheets on the roof and the wall were completely burnt in the incident. A worker said 20-old workers were present in the factory at the time of accident whereas the remaining staff had moved out for lunch. Family members of the injured workers at the hospital lamented that no one from the management came to the hospital to enquire about the workers’ health. When mediapersons reached the site, the management allegedly got the main entrance covered with a large tarpaulin sheet and closed all doors. Interestingly, when the Deputy Commissioner, Mr D.P.S. Nagal, reached the spot with other district officials, factory owners were quick to remove the petrol gun and other things from the site. |
