Lalru health centre cries for upgradation
Pradeep Sharma
Tribune News Service

Lalru, December 24
Strange are the ways of the Punjab Health Department. Even as it scouts for spacious buildings for its upgraded health centres, the local mini primary health centre (PHC) continues to cry for upgradation to a civil hospital even after a decade of its start.

This is despite the fact that the mini PHC, named after the legendary freedom fighter of the area, Baba Prithvi Singh Azad, has a spacious building which could easily accommodate a civil hospital or atleast a full-fledged PHC.

Though strategically located on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway, the upgradation of the mini PHC had been hanging fire for at least a decade with the residents petitioning the authorities concerned several times. The lack of medical and para-medical staff only added to the woes of the residents of around 60 surrounding villages.

“In the absence of the civil hospital, the residents of the area are forced to fend for themselves as currently there is no hospital between Ambala and Derabassi — a distance of about 25 km. The repeated representations to the officials and politicians of the area had failed to elicit any positive response,” alleges Rana Jasmer Singh, a former chairman of the local Market Committee.

The accident victims on the highway, which has become an accident prone area, are forced to fend for themselves. In fact, a precious life was lost today itself when a Senior Manager of Glaxo, Naresh Chander Malik, lost his life near here after his car was hit by a truck.

Demanding the upgradation of the mini PHC, the residents claimed that it was all more needed since the township was emerging as a major residential and commercial hub.

DAV paddlers make school proud
Our Sports Reporter

Chandigarh, December 24
The achievements of table tennis players of DAV Public School, Sector 8, Chandigarh, in the just concluded CBSE National Table Tennis meet has once again proved the prowess of the school in this sport.

The four-day TT tournament, which was organised for the first time in Chandigarh, went off well, thanks to the prudent management by the Principal, Ms Sarita Manuja. The paddlers of DAV Public School were runners-up in the under 14 section and won third place in the under 16 section. Mayank of DAV School was also given the best player of the tournament award.

Ms Manuja told this correspondent that earlier the CBSE had asked them to hold the north zone level meet. However, she always wanted to go in for Nationals, which was a herculian task. It involved more than 700 paddlers in three age groups — under 14, under 16 and under 19 in both boys and girls categories and about 100 officials.

The Regional Officer, Mr D.R. Yadav, congratulated the school management for successfully organising the tournament, said Ms Manuja. She said the technical officials led by Mr Ranjit Malik of Delhi deserved a lot of praise as they helped in the smooth conduct of the tournament. She said DAV Public School had been performing well in the inter school TT competitions and many of its players had won laurels at the national level. Nadia Saini, Dev Saini, Chetan, Barbie, Aishwarya, Naina Suri, Manik, Mayank Kapoor were a few players of the school who have won many titles in various tournaments at regional and national levels.

Ms Manuja said the teams, which had come from the Gulf region, were very happy at the good hospitality, which added glamour to the tournament. She said as the Gulf region had separate TT meet for the CBSE-affiliated schools at the zonal level, so they could have come only for the nationals, which were most of the time staged in India.

Ms Manuja said this was a novel attempt for their school but after this experience they were determined to host TT nationals to enable local players have maximum exposure.
