Rs 6 lakh robbed at gunpoint
Phagwara, December 17 In a complaint lodged with the Behram Police in Nawanshahr district, Jarnail Singh said he was carrying the cash to purchase construction material for his house when he was waylaid by the two clean shaven robbers, riding a red bike. The Behram SHO, Mr Rakesh Kumar, said a case under Section 392 of the IPC and the Arms Act had been registered against the accused. The latest incident may put the police in dock which is already grappling with the Rs 33 lakh robbery of foreign currency from two persons a month ago. In almost similar circumstances, two clean shaven motorcycle-borne youth had snatched a bag full of foreign currency from Jaiparkash and Amandeep, employees of the UAE Exchange and Financial Services, at about 6.30 pm on November 16 when they were going to their office after withdrawing the currency from the Capital Local Area Bank on the GT Road in Phagwara. The police had also released the sketches of the robbers prepared with the help of the description given by the witnesses. However, when contacted, a senior police officer said the police was not sitting idle over the robbery but making plans to get hold of the culprits at the earliest and added that it would be premature to say anything about the antecedents of the robbers. |

Trade unions demand review of Electricity Act
Jalandhar, December 17 The working president of the Electricity Employees Federation of India (EEFI) and the national secretary of the CITU, Mr S Dev Roy, said this while addressing media persons before the inauguration of a two-day conference on the issues related to the electricity sector and the urgent and important issues being faced by the trade union movement in the country. He said the Central government had agreed upon the review of the Electricity Act in an agreement struck between the government and trade unions on May 17, 2005, in which it had agreed to review the damaging provisions of the Act. But the same has not been undertaken so far, he alleged. “The review of the Act also finds mention in the common minimum programme struck between the UPA alliance partners before the formation of the government,” he said. The trade unions were going to hold a strong protest rally in front of the parliament on March 1 and if the government did not review the Act to reverse the process of unbundling which was only to facilitate the privatisation of the State Electricity Boards, the agitation would be stepped up, Mr Roy said. “The agitation has the support of the Left parties”. |
