Fracas marks Minister’s visit to Phagwara
Phagwara, December 8 One of the close associates of the minister, Mr Sukhwinder Singh, a member of the Jalandhar Zila Parishad, started misbehaving with a journalist when the latter asked for his version about his alleged manhandling of an ASI and the use of foul language against the Phagwara DSP earlier at the end of a public function held at the site of the under-construction local bus stand, which was to be inspected by the minister. It was learnt that Mr Sukhwinder Singh was having an old grudge against ASI Paramsunil Singh Randhawa, in charge, Police Post, Chaheru. On spotting the ASI who was on duty at the function , Sukhwinder Singh lost his cool and confronted Mr Randhawa by asking if he was the same official who had some time back detained one of his relatives. When the ASI answered in the affirmative, Mr Sukhwinder Singh again asked him whether he had now understood how much power he wielded as he had come with the minister and thus belonged to ‘sarkar’. He also warned the ASI that he would teach a lesson. Mr Sukhwinder is alleged to have roughed up the ASI which he, however, later denied. He used abusive language against DSP Navjot Singh Mahal, but later pleaded innocence, saying that he could not recognise him as the DSP was in plain clothes. When a correspondent asked Mr Sukhwinder Singh about the above-said two incidents, he shouted a big ‘yes’ and rather counter-questioned the locus standi of the journalist to put any queries about the incidence. This enraged media persons present there then rang up the DSP who had left as the minister had gone away. Some infuriated people and police then beat-up the Zila Parishad member. The DSP later took him to the city police station. In the melee, the turban of a VIP, who vainly tried to save the situation from taking an ugly turn, also fell down. On learning about the episode, the minister returned to the local PWD Rest House. The local MLA and the Chairman, Punjab Agro and Foods Corporation, Mr Joginder Singh Mann, Phagwara SDM Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal, DSP Mr Navjot Singh Mahal, Market Committee Chairman Jaspreet Singh Satti also reached the spot. With the intervention of Mr Kaypee and Mr Mann, the matter was resolved amicably late in the evening. |

The bus stand would have a revolving clock tower, restaurant cum hotel and a shopping complex, among other modern facilities for the public, said the minister. |
Jharkhand police recruits complete training at PAP
Kapurthala, December 8 Addressing the recruits after the passing-out parade, Mr Rajan Gupta, Additional Director General of Police (Punjab), exhorted them to stick to honesty and discipline in life and avoid the temptations coming their way while performing their duties. The nine-month training was rescheduled to be completed within six months on the demand of the Jharkhand police, as the state could not afford to spare its newly recruited 6,000 police personnel for training for longer time, the ADGP said. The Jharkhand government preferred the Punjab police to train their forces as the latter had tackled the problem of militancy effectively in the past, Mr Gupta added. In addition to 1020 constables who passed out today from the training centre here today, 770 police personnel from Jharkhand were passed out last year also, informed Mr Dlbagh Singh Gill, SP, In charge, Training Centre, while reading out the achievements of the center. He further said that a total of 31,250 police personnel of different ranks had been imparted training at this center, which was established for commando courses only in 1991 but converted into in-service training centre on January 1, 1993. The recruits were trained in the handling of explosives, First aid, fire brigade service, map reading, and weapons like SLR, LMG, 9 mm pistol, carbine, 2-inch mortar, HE 36 grenade, and GF rifle, the SP said. The recruits were sent to the Commando Training School, Bahadurgarh, to get commando training also, added Mr Dilbagh Singh. Constable Himanshu Shekhar Singh, Amitabh Kumar and Kuldip Sorang stood all round first, second and third, respectively, while Sanjay Kumar was adjudged first in Indoor. Over 70 per cent Doaba kids
Jalandhar, December 8 The dreaded dental disease has also gripped more than 80 per cent of the total population of adults in the districts of Jalandhar and Ludhiana due to increasing reliance on fast food and sugar. “People are not inclined to accede to the fact that oral care is as important as the general health. Dental up-keep is one of the most neglected area of health, especially of school-going kids, aged between six and 13, and the outcome is that a majority of them have already acquired dental caries or bacterial infection. Of the 3,322 patients, who were subjected to medical examination in the district during a recently concluded dental fortnight, more than 80 per cent found suffering from dental caries. Similarly, the teeth of nearly 55 per cent of the school-going kids were found infected,” said Dr Ashok Sharma, Head of the Dental Department of the Civil Hospital here. According to Dr Vivek Saggar, a Ludhiana-based dental specialist, the number of those suffering from dental caries was even bigger and the disease was rising by leaps and bounds. “An average 90 per cent population of Ludhiana and adjoining Phillaur has fallen prey to the disease. The basic reason is that nowadays people are rush for fast food or diet which is easy to break and soft to chew. People now prefer chocolates to ‘gur’. But unlike ‘gur’, which is a complex form of sugar, chocolate melts as soon as it is kept inside mouth so it hardly needs any chewing,” said Dr Saggar. He observed that though brushing habits of urbanites were more better, still their inclination towards refined food was creating problems for them as far as the teeth were concerned. “Though middle-aged people are better off if we consider their oral health, but the younger generation has almost lost track of their dental care. Brushing regularly alone does not help. You need to develop proper and healthy eating habits,” said Dr Kumar. Dr Vijay Kumar, another dentist in Jalandhar, said he was worried about the rural people as they were followed their urban counterparts as far as food habits were concerned. “Earlier, kids of rural areas were healthy from the dental point of view, as they chewed so many things as sugarcane, but now they are leaving traditional foods habits so dental problems have started knocking at their doorsteps,” said Dr Vijay Kumar. “Parents should know that if the milk teeth are treated properly, permanent teeth would largely be disease-free. So, parents should take care of oral health of their kids from the outset,” advised Dr Ashok Sharma. |
