This armyman paints to support poor students
Jalandhar, December 5 The soldier-turned-painter has set up an art gallery in Deep Nagar here where more than 300 of his paintings are on display. And by selling these works, Colonel Jena (Retd) is helping young boys and girls pay their fees so that they may not have to drop their studies for want of money. “It all began a decade ago in Calcutta when I came across a cancer patient in need of financial help. I decided to raise funds for him,” said the retired colonel. “I had been an amateur painter for quite some time and thought of selling my works to collect some money. And amazingly, the exhibition I put up got a tremendous response.” Colonel Jena (Retd) said he came across more such cancer patients and tried to help as many of them as he could. “But being an army man, I did not get ample time to make many paintings. And five years ago, I took pre-mature retirement and settled down in Jalandhar, my last area of posting.” But he has regrets. “In Jalandhar, there are not many buyers for art. People make palatial houses but do not intend to put a single painting on the walls. I used to do abstract paintings, but people here didn’t relish that form as much as the people in Calcutta, Chennai or New Delhi. Then I switched over to landscapes and still life and even started depicting foreign cultures. This got me more visitors,” said Colonel Jena (Retd). He said he kept visiting cities to hold exhibitions. “Recently, the BSF asked me to be part of their national-level exhibition in New Delhi. I also have an order from the Indian Army,” he said, showing a half-finished picture of a jawan riding a horse in the mountains. “Besides, I also help the students brush-up their communication skills in English so that they do not have to face problems in getting a suitable job.” Meanwhile, the students, whom the retired colonel has been helping, are also doing their bit to repay their “Sir.” One such student, Jaskarn, said, “I help Sir arrange the paintings during the exhibitions and also try to find suitable clientele for him.” And some of these students, doing MCA, MBA, M. Tech and BE courses, freely use the three computers installed at the gallery. |

She was here in the city today to buy books and Ghadar Party memorabilia from the Desh Bhagat Yadgari Hall. “The portrayal of such persons of great historical importance cannot be taken lightly,” she says. The actress also does not want any controversy on the contents of the film after its completion. Adeep Tandon and Nauni Kaur will be the director and assistant director, respectively, of the film. The shooting for the film will take place in Baradari Gardens in Patiala and Malerkotala and their surrounding areas and is scheduled to finish in 12 days. The script of the film has been written by Mr Rajinder Atish. She took books written on the hero, photos, and agenda of the Ghadar party from the Desh Bhagat Yaadgaar Hall. Impressed by the efforts of the Hall in maintaining the spirit of the freedom movement in the Mela Ghadari Babeyan Da, Sapru said she would take part in the next mela and also assured the managing committee of the Yaadgaar Hall that she would ensure participation of her colleagues, including Raj Babbar and Gurdas Mann at the mela. Talking about the recent resurgence of the Punjabi films, the actress said it marked a new phase of the regional cinema. However, she added, films only on the NRI theme was not a good trend.
