Happy with cops, Quark institutes award
Mohali, December 9
Terming the cracking of Sukhvinder’s murder case as a brilliant job done by the Punjab Police, Mr Fred Ebrahimi, QuarkCity Chairman, today said the company had instituted an award for the Punjab Police personnel who had solved the case. A corpus of Rs 25 lakh had been set aside by the company for the purpose, for which further donations would be solicited.

Rs 92.49 lakh penalty imposed on erring power consumers
Chandigarh, December 9
The Electricity Wing of the Engineering Department of the Chandigarh Administration has imposed a penalty of Rs 92.49 lakh on the electricity consumers who were either found using unauthorised load or involved in the theft of electricity during the routine checking carried out from June to September, an official press note said here today.

Senior citizens get Net training

The Sector 30 branch of the State Bank of India, organised a Computer-Internet training programme for senior citizens of Sri Sathya Sai Old Age Home, Sector 30, Chandigarh. The two-week training programme which concluded today covered the basics of computers, use of MS-Office, e-mail and internet.

Pistol recovered
Mohali, December 9
The Mohali police today claimed to have recovered the .32 bore pistol that was used for killing Sukhvinder Singh, the 35-year-old Quark engineer who was shot dead on Sunday night. Himmat Singh, alias Brandy, and Neki Nalwa, wife of the deceased had been arrested for having committed the crime.

Rickshaw-puller held for minor’s rape

The local police today arrested a 24-year-old rickshaw puller on a charge of raping a minor girl in Sector 52.

The Raipur Rani police today claimed to have busted a flesh trade racket by arresting five persons, including three call girls.

Body identified, family cries murder

A family of Allahpur village today identified as Foopinder Singh, the body of a young male found from open fields in Radiala village on the Kharar-Kurali road here yesterday. The body with a face virtually covered with blood was found by a passerby from the village who informed the Sahora police post.

Open schooling results out
Chandigarh, December 9
The National Institute of Open Schooling, Regional Centre, Chandigarh, yesterday declared the results of Classes X and XII examinations held in October, 2005. As against the results of examination held in April, 2005, the current results have shown improvement. The pass percentage for Class X is 36.38, as compared to the earlier 21.03 per cent. For Class XII, the pass percentage is 43.98.

Institute donates Rs 1 lakh for quake-hit

The management, staff and students of the Sri Sukhmani Institute of Engineering and Technology (SSIET) and Sri Sukhmani International School have donated Rs 1 lakh to the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for earthquake victims of Jammu and Kashmir.

Following an Army Court of Inquiry (CoI) holding a lady officer prima facie blameworthy for professional impropriety while conducting military trials, she has been "attached" to a different formation for the commencement of disciplinary proceedings, it is learnt.

North Zone beat Headquarters 2-1 in the final of the 35th All India FCI Inter-Zonal Hockey Tournament at Hockey Stadium, Sector 42, here today. Karnataka pile up 511 for 5

Mr Gurinder Singh, Senior Manager, Punjab National Bank, Ropar, has been nominated by the All India Carrom Federation (AICF) as the Assistant Chief Referee for the 9th SAARC Countries Carrom Championship to be held in Maldives from December 14 to 17. He is also the joint secretary of the AICF and general secretary of the Punjab State Carrom Association.

City to have Heritage Conservation Centre

The Chandigarh Administration has constituted a committee under the chairmanship of the Adviser to the UT Administrator for setting up a Heritage Conservation Centre in the direction of placing the city on the list of World Heritage City.
