North Zone lift trophy

Chandigarh, December 9
North Zone beat Headquarters 2-1 in the final of the 35th All India FCI Inter-Zonal Hockey Tournament at Hockey Stadium, Sector 42, here today.
Headquarters took the lead in the first half as the forward Amit Kumar scored the first goal. The equaliser came through Gurpreet one minute before interval.

In the second half, North Zone earned seven penalty corners, but could not capitalise on the chances.

Amar Negi converted one to enable the team to lift the trophy for the 10th time on the trot. Satinder Singh of North Zone was declared ‘Player of the Tournament’.

Karnataka pile up 511 for 5

Chandigarh, December 9
Resuming from the overnight score of 309 runs for three, Karnataka today batted formidably to pile up a huge total of 511 runs for five before declaring their first innings in the Cooch Behar (Under19) Cricket Tournament which entered the second day here today at Sector 16 Cricket Stadium.

Ganesh remained unbeaten for 130 runs with 14 hits to the fence. Amit Verma was another star batsman who scored 118 runs . He had 14 boundaries and two sixers in his total score. Ali Murtaza of Uttar Pradesh bagged two wickets for 93 runs.

In reply, Uttar Pradesh played 32 overs and were one wickets down for 111 runs. Gaurav Goel batted well with 48 runs and scored six boundaries. Brijinder was unbeaten with 28 runs. Tomorrow is the final day of the tournament.

Pooja secures first place

Pooja and Mohit Rana of Lily House secured first place in 100 metres on the second day of the annual athletics meet of Sri Guru Harkrishan Model School, Sector 38-D, at Sector 46 sports complex. The 400 metres race for girls was also a close finish, with Amandeep of Rose House winning by a split second.

Banker selected referee for carrom championship

Mr Gurinder Singh, Senior Manager, Punjab National Bank, Ropar, has been nominated by the All India Carrom Federation (AICF) as the Assistant Chief Referee for the 9th SAARC Countries Carrom Championship to be held in Maldives from December 14 to 17.
He is also the joint secretary of the AICF and general secretary of the Punjab State Carrom Association.

Hans Raj student wins gold in skating

Jatin Sachdeva of Hans Raj Public School has won two gold medals in the age group of 8-10 years in the 11th Panchkula District Rollar Skating meet held at Bhawan Vidyalaya, Sector 15, Panchkula recently. Jatin bagged one gold each in rink race and road race events.

Rs 100 cr market complex in Phase XI planned

Mohali, December 9
An ultra modern agro product market complex has been planned for Phase XI here. Twenty acres at Kambali village have been allotted to the Punjab Mandi Board for the construction of the complex at a cost of over Rs 100 crore.

Giving details of the project, which is due to begin early next year, the Kharar MLA, Mr Bir Devinder Singh, said today the complex would have 206 fully air-conditioned showrooms. Each showroom would have three stories. The airconditioned basement would be used as storage space while the ground floor would be the shop and the upper floor the office. A central facility for ripening and cold storage would also be provided to the shopkeepers.

The MLA said the market had been planned on the lines of the European markets and was expected to give a boost to the farmers dealing in vegetables, fruits and flowers. “There is going to be four banks here, an auditorium a petrol station,” he said. He was talking to mediapersons at the site of the market complex following a meeting with the Punjab Mandi Board Chairman, Mr Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria.

City to have Heritage Conservation Centre

The Chandigarh Administration has constituted a committee under the chairmanship of the Adviser to the UT Administrator for setting up a Heritage Conservation Centre in the direction of placing the city on the list of World Heritage City.

An official press note here yesterday said the Home Secretary who is also Secretary Tourism would be the Vice-Chairman of the committee. The other members of the committee include the Finance Secretary, Chief Architect, Principal of College of Architecture, Mrs Kiran Joshi, Lecturer at CCA, Mr M.N.Sharma, a former Chief Architect, Director of Tourism, Director Public Relations and Mrs Sangeeta Mehta Bagga, a lecturer at CCA.

The Adviser has constituted a state-level committee to screen and scrutinise the proposals received from voluntary organisations, which would be subsequently forwarded to the National Archives of India for financial assistance. The non-official members of the committee include Prof Indu Banga (history), Prof Pushpinder Syal (English) and Prof H.R. Chopra (library and information science), all from Panjab University.

The committee will receive all applications or proposals for financial assistance under the scheme from various non-governmental organisations or individuals located within its jurisdiction. It will examine the proposals to ascertain the coverage of applicant under the said scheme and the status of the applicant institution/individual, including their capacity to pool in their matching share.

The importance and feasibility of the proposal or project will also be examined. It will submit the recommendation and observation to National Archives of India for consideration in the meetings of the grants committee for the said scheme.
