Kurukshetra, November 19
Undertrial Prahlad Singh has committed suicide by jumping before a train on the rail track near the Doda Kheri railway station between Kurukshetra and Ambala.

The undertrial escaped in the wee hours on Friday from the local Lok Narayan Jai Prakash Civil Hospital where he had been admitted on November 11.

DSP, HQ, Jagwant Singh Lamba told The Tribune that the crushed body was recovered from the rail track on Friday afternoon itself.

While the body had already been identified as that of escaped undertrial Prahlad Singh by some jail inmates and policemen, he said the police wanted to get identification by his relatives. Following this a relative was called and he identified the body.

The police already booked five policemen, including ASI Bhim Singh, Constables Jagmal, Ram Sharan, Dalbir and Jee Ram, for dereliction of duty. An FIR under Section 224 of the IPC was registered at the Kurukshetra University police station against them.

In reply to a question, Mr Lamba said they would be suspended when the case would come in the court for hearing.

According to police sources, Prahlad Singh was accused of killing his wife Champa after some altercation with her over his drinking habits.

He was lodged in Kurukshetra district jail from where he was admitted to the hospital eight days ago. The sources said he went to toilet at 4.45 am on Friday. Constable Jagmal accompanied him.

The undertrial pushed him on his way to the toilet and fled the spot. The ASI and the four constables, responsible for his security, kept on hunting him for three hours but failed to search him.

Ambala, November 19
The Director-General of Haryana police, Mr Nirmal Singh, dressed in a Rajasthani costume, allegedly caught Station House Officer of Parao police station in Ambala cantonment while accepting a bribe today.

Sub-Inspector Baljit Singh, SHO of Parao police station, was allegedly caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 from a complainant.

Mr Nirmal Singh personally carried out the operation to nab SI Baljit Singh. To ensure that he could not be identified, Mr Nirmal Singh wore a Rajasthani costume.

Mr Nirmal Singh arrived at the police station along with the complainant, Mr Omkar Singh, in an unmarked Bolero vehicle. After entering the police station, they went up to SHO Baljit Singh and handed over Rs 20,000.

After handing over the money, Mr Nirmal Singh casually enquired from Baljit Singh whether he did not feel afraid while taking bribe though he was aware that the DGP of Haryana was a strict person. Mr Nirmal Singh then asked Baljit Singh whether he knew him.

It was then that Mr Nirmal Singh removed his Rajasthani turban and revealed his identity. The DSP (Flying), Mr Rajesh Duggal, and his team, which was waiting outside, swiftly moved in and immediately arrested SI Baljit Singh.

A TV news channel team was present there when the incident took place.

Mr Nirmal Singh pointed out to the IG Ambala Range, Mr S.S. Deswal, an anomaly on the board outside the police station where the old numbers of the DGP Haryana had been displayed.

The complainant, Mr Omkar Singh, said SI Baljit Singh had been demanding money for arresting some persons against whom he had registered an FIR over a land dispute. Mr Omkar Singh said that SI Baljit Singh was demanding Rs 20,000 in the case.

He said they had complained to the DGP and sought action against the SI. He said the DGP had personally carried out the operation against SHO.

The Additional Director-General of Haryana police, Mr John V. George, who also arrived at the police station, said the SI had been arrested for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000.

Residents of Lal Kurti, where Parao police station is located, were pleasantly surprised to learn that DGP Haryana was personally taking action against the SHO. Since 2.30 pm when DGP Haryana walked into the police station, there was a crowd outside the police station, eager to know about the developments.

Mr Chander Mohan went on to say that the law and order in the state had improved ever since the Hooda government had taken over the reins of the government. He was talking to mediapersons here today.

Mr Chander Mohan, however, said everyone had the right to say whatever he felt. He said the views of his brother were his own and he did not want to comment on it. The Deputy Chief Minister, who was here to attend marriage ceremonies at the residence of his cousin, Mr Dwarka Prasad, said the state government had fulfilled 90 per cent of the promises it had made to the people during elections.

He said the present government had worked for the betterment of people and all sections of the society had been feeling relieved ever since the Hooda government came to power.

He also sought to downplay the factionalism between the groups led by his father and HPCC president, Mr Bhajan Lal, and working president of the Congress Ram Prakash and said there were no differences between the two leaders and both leaders were trying to take the party ahead through their respective efforts.
