Hurriyat to take up non-implementation of assurances with PM
Our Correspondent

Jammu, November 14
The All-Party Hurriyat Conference leadership has decided to take up the issue of non-implementation of assurances on several matters given to party leaders by the Prime Minister with Mr Manmohan Singh in the next round of talks.

A former APHC chairman, Maulvi Abbas Ansari, said today that “during our maiden round of talks with Mr Manmohan Singh on September 5 we demanded the release of all those detained for a period ranging between five to 12 years.”

He added “we had also demanded an end to custodial killings, search operations and harassment to common people by security forces. We also favoured reduction of troops in the valley.”

Maulvi Ansari said that “not a single demand had been conceded and the main stream political leaders, including those running the Government in Kashmir took the advantage of the Prime Minister’s direction under which a screening committee had to recommend the release of detained people.” He explained that instead of freeing those we had identified, pick pockets, timber smugglers and other criminals, known to political leaders, were released.

He said in the next round of talks “we will raise this issue and apprise the Prime Minister of the situation in which custodial killings had increased.

He and his party colleagues Prof Abdul Gani Bhat said in the absence of fulfilling the assurances given by Mr Manmohan Singh “our rivals in the separatist camp had started casting aspersions on us blaming us of a sellout.

Prof Bhat, in reply to a question, said that “we expect invitation for another round of talks from the PMO because Delhi and Islamabad have to hold parleys with us. What else can they do except holding talks with us.”

He said “we represent sentiments of the people of Kashmir and dynamics of change while our rival Syed Ali Shah Geelani represents, as he claims, only the sentiments and not the change.

Prof Bhat said that “the APHC alone is a relevant political forum because mainstream political leaders, including Dr Farooq Abdullah, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad talked of only change and not of the sentiments of the people.”

The two APHC leaders said that “both India and Pakistan had recognised our conglomerates as a genuine political forum and hence we have been able to start talking to Delhi and Islamabad.” They said that “we have been trying to resolve the Kashmir issue through sustained and meaningful dialogue. Our efforts were being weakened by the cold response Delhi gave to our demands and suggestions thereby providing an opportunity to our rivals to launch a campaign against us.

Omar seeks Peerzada’s dismissal from ministry

Srinagar, November 14
National Conference (NC) President Omar Abdullah today urged Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to dismiss his Cabinet colleague Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed in the wake of “startling revelations by the Accountability Commission Chairman, Justice R.P. Sethi, regarding his involvement in the multi-crore Panchayat Ghar electrification scam”.

This was a test case for the Chief Minister, Mr Abdullah said in a statement here.

“The minister has been indicted by no less a person than the Chairman of the all-important Accountability Commission. As such, the propriety demands that he should voluntarily step down from the post,” the NC chief said.

“In case he fails to do so, the Chief Minister should immediately dismiss him honouring his categorical and unambiguous commitment made to the public at large on the eve of assumption of power in the state that he would not tolerate corruption at any level,” Mr Abdullah said.

The NC President said the charges were of serious nature which needed urgent consideration and “cannot be dismissed off hand”. — UNI
