South African delegation visits PAU

Ludhiana, November 10
A high-level delegation from South Africa led by Mr Simo Egra Mfayela, Mayor of Ilember, visited Punjab Agricultural University today. The delegation sought help and cooperation from the PAU in developing the agriculture sector in South Africa.

The delegation members met the Vice-Chancellor, Dr K.S Aulakh. He told the delegation the PAU was already having a close relationship with South Africa for exchange of scientists. He apprised the delegation of the salient achievements in the field of agriculture. He pointed out that Punjab was the food bowl of India and the PAU had made immense contribution in it.

Dr Aulakh also talked about the achievements of the university in ensuring the success of the Green Revolution in the country and making the country self sufficient in food production.

The delegation members wanted some special concessions for the South African students so that they could study agriculture here. The Vice-Chancellor told them that the PAU was regularly admitting foreign students through the Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR). He said the South African Government could coordinate with the ICAR for the admission of its students in the PAU. He said, the university would be too glad to accommodate the South African students.

The members of the team included Peter Johannes Verrijdi, J.K Naidoo, Heridik Pretorius, Mr Madhun Sobram Singh and Ndibakazipki John Khswavo.

The meeting was attended by, among others, by the Registrar, Mr V.K Sharma, Dr Dashan Singh, Dr S.K Sondhi, Dr Manjit Kaur Dhillon, Dr D.R Sharma, Dr L.S Brar and Mr P.P.S Gill.

Rs 1 lakh grant for SD College

Ludhiana, November 10
Mr Surinder Dawar, Parliamentary Secretary, has given a cheque for Rs 1 lakh to Mr Naveen Mittal, President of Kamla Lohtia S D College, Subhash Nagar. The grant was announced by Mr Surinder Dawar on the occasion of the annual athletics meet of the college.

The grant will be utilised for athletics meet and development of the building of the college.

Extension lectures: The P G Department of History of Guru Nanak Girls College, Model Town, organised extension lectures here yesterday.

Prof Surinder Singh, Chairman, Department of History, Panjab University, Chandigarh, delivered a lecture on “Economy of medieval India” and “Social and political contacts of mysticism”.

He spoke about the economic conditions during the Sultanat and Mughal periods and the features of Sufism.

Principal, Charanjit Mahal motivated faculty members to organise more such lectures.

Army camp at SDP College: 28 Air Defence Regiment, Jalandhar cantonment, organised a 15-day camp recently in which five NCC cadets of 3 Punjab Girls Battalion, SDP College for Women, Ludhiana, and five cadets of 5 Punjab Girls Battalion, (Moga) participated.

The cadets were given firing practice. They visited the Artillery Regiment, 8 Mech Kapurthala and the Air Force station, Adampur. They were also told about weapons.

Col Debasish Mitra, Co, 28 Air Defence Regiment, honoured Lt Dr Asha Aneja, NCC officer, SDP College for Women.

Industrial visit: Management students of Gujranwala Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology visited Cremica Industries as part of practical training here today.

A visit to the production department gave the students a better view on production.

Medical camp in memory of Shaheed Sarabha

Ludhiana, November 10
The Maha Sabha will organise a free medical camp, on the martyrdom day of Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha at Sunet village in this district on November 19. The camp would be held at the site of a proposed memorial for Shaheed Baba Bhan Singh of ‘gadar’ movement.

Giving this information here today, Mr Jaswant Zeerakh, general-secretary of the sabha, said the district health administration was being approached to provide a team of medical and para-medical professionals for the examination of patients. The organisers would make arrangements for distribution of free medicines, he added.

According to Mr Zeerakh, renowned eye surgeon, Dr Ramesh (of Mansooran), will render free consultation at the camp and also perform free eye operations later at his hospital for those patients in need of corrective surgery.

In addition, blood group tests of voluntary blood donors will be carried out and eye donation forms will also be filled up at the camp.

AIDS awareness caravan reaches city

Ludhiana, November 10
An AIDS awareness caravan sponsored by the Punjab State Aids Control Society to propagate the message of prevention against the dreaded disease, arrived at the Civil Hospital here today. The caravan comprising five trucks, and depicting precautionary steps against AIDS was flagged off on October 31.

According to Dr Rajinder Kaur Civil Surgeon, the caravan reached the hospital at Jagraon this morning. On its way to the city, caravan, members, led by the mass media wing of the Health Department, interacted with the public and health staff at Raikot, Pakhowal, Sudhar and Mullanpur.

The caravan would leave for to Sahnewal tomorrow morning after organising awareness rallies at the Grain Market and the Truck stand. From Sahnewal, the caravan would leave for Koharea, Samrala, Machhiwara, Koom Kalan, Basti Jodhewal, Mehareban, Jalandhar, Ladhowal and Jalandhar.

Bhumika wins gold in long jump

Ludhiana, November 10
Players of Ludhiana and those from Bathinda, Muktsar and Mansa won in kabaddi on the third day of the 24th Punjab State Inter-District Primary Schools Games being held at Guru Nanak Stadium here today.

In long jump, Harvinder Singh proved too good for his rivals and won the title. Sukhdeep Singh of Muktsar and Manpreet Singh of Fatehgarh Sahib finished second and third, respectively.

In 200 m for boys, Rajandeep Singh of Amritsar, Manpreet Singh from Moga, Sukhminder Singh of Mansa, Baljinder Singh of Faridkot, Neeraj Kumar of Ludhiana and Mandeep Singh of Fatehgarh Sahib proved their mettle and reached the finals.

In 400 m Gurdaspur’s Hardev Singh along with Khushdeep Singh from Muktsar, Satguru Singh of Sangrur, Aachhar Singh of Patiala and Ranjit Singh from Ferozepore entered the finals while in the 4x 100 m relay race, Sangrur, Ludhiana, Moga, Bathinda, Gurdaspur and Mansa advanced into the finals.

In the girls’ section, Bhumika of Gurdaspur won gold in long jump, followed by Jasvinder Kaur of Patiala and Ramandeep Kaur of Gurdaspur. In the 200 m, Sandeep Kaur of Faridkot, Rakhee of Ludhiana and Anu Galhotra of Gurdaspur, Gagandeep Kaur of Bathinda, Manpreet Kaur and Rekha of Hoshiarpur emerged winners to enter the semi finals.

In kho-kho (boys), Patiala b Faridkot 4-3, Jalandhar b Ludhiana 3-2, Muktsar b Mansa 6-5 while in the girl’s section, Ferozepore outclassed Faridkot, and Sangrur defeated Nawanshahr to march into the next round.

In kabaddi, Bathinda boys b Gurdaspur, Mansa b Moga, Ludhiana b Nawanshahr, Muktsar b Fatehgarh Sahib and Bathinda b Sangrur.

Sports week at school ends

Ludhiana, November 10
Sacred Heart Convent School celebrated the culmination of the sports week here yesterday. The annual sports meet was formally declared closed, followed by march past and 2000 mt race.

The director of the school, Rev Fr. Hormise Nirmal Roy, presided and gave away the prizes to winners of various sports and cultural events held throughout the week. Prizes were also given to winners of a healthy baby show held to mark children’s week.

Parmjeet Kaur of Class VIII was declared the best athlete among girls and Yuvraj Singh of Class. IX was declared the best athlete among boys.
