Uri-Aman Setu road opened
Kamaan Bridge (Uri), November 9 The high-mounted hoardings reading out famous couplets from Dr Shekh Iqbal, the poet of the east, and others do not catch one’s eyes on the route. It is only rough patches, dusty atmosphere, stretches of road having been washed away and heavy stones blocking the traffic which are visible. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), which looks after the road from Srinagar, has lost at least 66 of its men, including labourers in the quake. It was expected that the road would be made functional after about two months, but for the untiring work of the BRO personnel, fighting the tough terrain due to landslides have made it possible to open it after about one month only. This could be possible by airlifting of dozers from Uri to Udoosa, which led to the restoration work from both ends. The Beacon men and labourers fighting all odds continue to make clear the rough surfaces, removing debris and clearing washed surfaces, even as fresh tremors continue like that which hit the area at 12.50 p.m. today. |
Strong aftershock in Kaman Post area
Kaman Post (LoC), November 9 The aftershock was felt at around 12.55 pm just when the porters from the Indian side and PoK were carrying the relief material as the second point on the Line of Control at Kaman Post in Uri was opened today. The magnitude and other details of the aftershock was, however, not immediately known. More than 100 aftershocks have hit the earthquake-affected areas of Jammu and Kashmir and PoK since the killer October 8 temblor. — PTI |
