Chaos ruled city roads during PM’s visit

It was chaos all the way today. Even though the Chandigarh Police had guaranteed a free flow of traffic on the busy Madhya Marg during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to the city, commuters had to struggle for over half an hour in the morning, and again in the afternoon, in an attempt to find their way through the jams.

Tough time for cops in city of VIPs
Chandigarh, November 9
Public servants, including cops, are at the receiving end. So far this year, as many as 16 government employees have been assaulted by miscreants in different parts of the city. In September alone three public servants were attacked.

Another suspected dengue case at PGI
Chandigarh, November 9
A day after the PGI confirmed the first reported case of dengue in the city, another suspected case was today reported in the hospital. According to doctors, the suspected case, Ramchandra, (32) of Hallo Majra had been suffering from fever for the past few days.

Punjab Police acts villain in love story; local cops to rescue

It was an attempt by the Punjab Police to play villain in a love story but was foiled by the local cops. They reached a house in Sector 8 this morning without informing the local police in an apparent attempt to whisk away a couple.

Youth ends life in guesthouse
Chandigarh, November 9
A Faridabad resident ended his life in a city guesthouse after hanging himself from bathroom fittings with the help of a bedsheet. His body was discovered by the hotel staff this evening.

Mohali civic body moots Singapore-style sanitation
Mohali, November 9
The local municipal council plans to introduce a new sanitation system based on the Singapore pattern. The Singapore pattern has been studied and necessary changes suggested to give the proposed system an “Indian touch”.

Oppn opposed to proposed MC draft
Mohali, November 9
Opposing the proposed draft prepared in connection with the coming elections, municipal councillors belonging to the Opposition group have alleged that the council president got wards divided into many parts in the draft to gain electoral edge.

Solar energy to light Kajheri
Chandigarh, November 9
Following the completion of works on installing streetlights using solar energy at Kaimbwala, Sarangpur, Mauli Jagran and Maloya villages, Kajheri is all set to have the new lights before the end of the current financial year.

Watch out! Snatchers on the prowl

Recheck locks before you leave your house, or grip the mobile phone tightly while walking down the unlit streets. For, thieves and snatchers are robbing the peace of mind of city residents blatantly despite adoption of stringent anti-theft measures by the Chandigarh Police in recent months.

Mohali may become a fashion hub

With the state-of-the-art Fashion Technology Park coming up in Mohali, the township along with Chandigarh is all poised to become India’s new fashion hub. Union Textiles Minister Shankar Singh Vaghela who was in the city today assured builders and promoters of the park that his Ministry would provide all possible support to the venture develop this region as the Indian fashion mart.

Panel dwells on fashion, women empowerment

“Put your head straight and be dignified,” is what empowerment means to Jaya Jaitley, founder and president, Dastkari Haat Samiti. Stressing the need for empowering more women, she advocated empowerment through centralisation and integration of the unorganised sector, which is the largest employer of women in the country.

Journalists’ directory by Jan

A directory of all journalists from the print and electronic media will be published by the Chandigarh Journalists Association in January next year. A decision to this effect was taken by the executive committee of the association at a meeting here today.

Awareness camp for SCs/BCs tomorrow

The Chandigarh Scheduled Castes, Backward Classes and Minorities Financial and Development Corporation in collaboration with Social Welfare Department and the Child and Women Development Corporation, has decided to organise an awareness camp on November 11 at Government High School, Mauli Jagran.

14 employees of enforcement wing repatriated
Chandigarh, November 9
Unhappy with their performance, at least 14 employees of the Enforcement Wing of the Estate Office of Chandigarh Administration have been repatriated to their parents states of Punjab or Haryana, official sources said here today.

Man duped of 547 boxes of apples
Chandigarh, November 9
The owner and the driver of a truck have duped Mr Mahinder Singh of Link Roadways in Grain Market, Sector 26, of 547 boxes of apples. They were supposed to reach the apples Andhra Pradesh but till date their are no whereabouts of theirs.

Bakery worker stabs fellow
Chandigarh, November 9
A worker allegedly stabbed a co-worker early this morning on the Sector 15 and 16 dividing road. The victim sustained serious injuries in the attack and was rushed to the Sector 16 General Hospital from where he was later referred to the PGI.

Man found dead
Chandigarh, November 9
A 45-year-old resident of Motor Market, Manimajra, was found dead near the shop he was working today. The police while ruling out any foul play behind the death said there were no injuries marks on the body.

Two held for supplying underweight cylinders
Chandigarh, November 9
The police today nabbed two employees of a city-based gas agency on the allegation of supplying underweight LPG cylinders. The accused were taken into custody while they were filling gas in empty cylinders from full cylinders.
