Over 50 orthodontics take exam Chandigarh, November 9 They not only included final-year postgraduate students of orthodontics but also some of the very senior orthodontics from various parts of the country. Held at the PGIMER for the first time, board Chairman D. Joseph Varghese said membership of the board facilitated peer assessment and excellence in practice. While becoming the member of the Indian Orthodontic Society was much simpler, to be the member of the board required a lot of hard work as one had to clear a written examination and present five best cases treated by the orthodontist followed by a viva. Dr N.R. Radhaswamy, vice-chairman of the board, said the cases were judged on various parameters, including severity of the problem, diagnosis and treatment plan, quality of records, facial changes and the overall assessment of the treatment. Terming the examination a self-learning and evaluating process, Dr Varghese added that when the doctors took the examination they evaluated their own cases as they were expected to submit the best five cases and in the process improve upon the quality and clinical skills. Talking about such boards in various parts of the country, both chairman and vice-chairman, who attended the World Orthodontic Congress, said the IBO might introduce the system of re-certification in future to maintain the high standards of the board. They added that while the IBO expected the doctor to submit five cases, the American Board of Orthodontics sought five such cases. IBO secretary Dr Lodd Mahendra was also present. |
