Mandi Ahmedgarh, November 6
Examination of a number of patients at an eye-examination camp, which was organised by the Lions Club Greater at the local Hind Hospital today, revealed that environmental pollution was the main cause behind vision problems.

A team of ophthalmologists, led by Dr Shawinder Singh, former HOD, Rajindra Medical Hospital, Patiala, observed that environmental pollution and the lack of knowledge about healthcare were the main reasons behind vision deterioration among the rural masses. “The poisonous smoke emanating from burning paddy stubbles contributes most to the environmental pollution these day. Eye problems would continue to be reported till the smoke is washed down with downpour,” said Dr Shawinder.

According to Mr Ashok Verma, president of the club, round 300 patients were examined for various eye ailments and more than 70 patients were operated upon for planting intraocular lenses free of cost.

As the district health authorities had not permitted the organisers to perform operations at the private hospital, the surgeries were performed at the Civil Hospital here and patients were referred to the Hind Hospital for post-operative treatment.
