Paramjit Singh Sidhu, the singer, performer, composer, songwriter and a crusader for preserving and promoting Punjabi culture holds the place of Bai (big brother) in the circuit of regional artists. Hence, Pammi Bai is respected for the dignity he brings to folk music. “Every word I sing and present must speak of the richness of the culture I represent.”

Pammi Bai’s eyes shine when he speaks of his compositions and how even children sing “Ae desh Punjabi doston.”

The former civil servant has made folk dance performances an inseparable part of nay performance. As he moves with his troupe comprising college students from Patiala (his hometown), Sammi and Jhummar pulsate with the rhythm of Bhangra. Bai says the finer nuances of dance should be understood by the audiences.

He says he prefers to have the videos shot in Punjab and not rush to Mumbai’s sun and sand. “Promoting Punjabi culture, dresses, dance, music and above all Punjabiat is my motto.”

Pammi Bai began as programme officer in the Ministry of Human Resources and Culture says the company of senior artists he got there also turned him into an artist.

His only grudge is that the government is not conserving dances, music and other folk idioms.

Pammi Bai is coming out with another album, soon.
