Advantage for power boards’ sports teams

Chandigarh, October 27
The power boards’ sports teams of various states would have the advantage of directly taking part in 12 different national meets organised by various national sport federations.

This was stated by Mr Maha Singh, the newly-appointed secretary-general of the All-India Electricity Sports Control Board (AIESCB). He said this could be possible as the AIESCB was now affiliated to 12 national sport bodies. He said even power corporations like Tata Power, Indraprastha Power and Reliance were affiliated to the AIESCB.

In a brief interaction with Chandigarh Tribune, he said it would be ensured that in this years’ national championships, the AIESCB team was well represented. The disciplines and their respective national federations where the AIESCB teams could take part were athletics, cycling, badminton, boxing, volleyball, table tennis, carrom, body building, bridge hockey, and powerlifting.

When asked about the number of sports meet under the ambit of the AIESCB, Mr Maha Singh, said this year it would organise All-India sports meets in 16 disciplines with first such meet held in lawn tennis being held in Hyderabad. This would be followed by athletics in Bangalore tournament . Badminton will be held in Panchkula in November while wrestling in the month of December. The sport disciplines Kabaddi, bridge, basketball and women sports will be held in January next year. He said in February 2006, they would have All-India electricity boards meet in Football, table tennis, hockey while cricket and chess would be organised in March next.

Ananya, Dhruv win debate

The Association of British Scholars (Chandigarh chapter) organised a debate competition in association with Satluj Public School, Sector 4, here yesterday. The chief guest, Mr D.V. Bhatia, president of the association, and Mr Krit Seraj, principal, Satluj Public School, Panchkula, lightened the lamp to start the competition.

The participating schools included Mount Carmel, Sector 47, Manav Mangal, Sector 21, Sacred Heart, Sector 26, AKSIPS, Sector 41, Satluj Public School, Sector 4, St Kabir, Sector 26, St Xavier’s Sector 20, Panchkula, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Sector 15, Panchkula, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Sector 27, St John’s, Sector 26, St Stephen’s, and St Vivekanand, Chandimandir.

The topic of the debate was “Responsibility for securing a sustainable future by preventing hydro-wars does not rest upon the government”.

This was the preliminary round for the Tata Steel Rolling Trophy on Hydro-wars. The finals will be held in Jamshedpur from November 30 to December 2, 2005, by the ABS Chapter of Jamshedpur. Winners were awarded trophies and certificates by the chief guest.

The winners are: Ananya of St Kabir Public School, Sector 26, Chandigarh, and Dhruv of St Xavier Public School, Sector 20, Panchkula.

Runners up: Shweta Sharma of Satluj Public School, Sector 4, Panchkula, and Ameen Jauhar of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Sector 27, Chandigarh.

Yoga camp

A yoga camp will be held at the park near the Math Mandir, Sector 20, Chandigarh, from 5.30am to 7.30am on October 30. Mr Gopal Das, district president of the Bharatiya Yog Sansthan, will conduct the camp.

2 DSPs shuffled

Chandigarh, October 27
The UT Administration today ordered transfers of two Deputy Superindents (DSPs) of the police.

Sources in the police said DSP Devinder Thakur has swapped places with Deputy Commandant of Home Guards, Mohan Lal Verma. Devinder Thakur was holding the charge of DSP Security.

The transfers have been ordered by the administration following recommendations made by the IG.

It is learnt that Mohan Lal Verma had been indicted in a departmental inquiry initiated against him for the misappropriation of his powers. He was reportedly instrumental in the recruitments of Home Guard jawans in violation of rules.
