There will be active participation of medical colleges in the surveillance activities.

Chandigarh, October 24
Keeping in view the current and rising trend of Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs), the union India will soon initiate a national NCD programme for cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. Already there is national cancer, blindness and mental health programmes functioning in the country. To this end the Indian Council of Medical Research on the directions of the government has submitted a proposal regarding the integrated prevention and control of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.

In Chandigarh to attend a three day workshop on “NCD: Prevention and Control”, Dr Prashant Mathur, Senior Research Officer, ICMR, said since the NCDs occurred in the most productive years of life, mainly between 30-69 years, the national programme would not only help in the reduction of occurrence of the NCD but also assist in the prevention of the disease.

The proposed programme, said Dr Prashant , will not be very resource intensive and will study the risk factors and preventive measures to control these disorders at a community level.

Talking about the various research projects concerning the NCDs, Dr Prashant said a research study on Initiating a Multi-organ Approach for Cancer is currently on in Himachal Pradesh. In addition to this a World Bank project known as the Integrated Disease Surveillance Project has also been started, said Dr Prashant. The project, he said, will be completed in three phases and in the first phase nine states are being covered, including Himachal Pradesh. The project, he said, will cover both the CD and the NCD component.
