Irfan Pathan bowls India to series sweep
Harare, September 22 The Indians allowed Zimbabwe to avoid an innings defeat with some poor fielding as the hosts managed to score 223 in their second innings before the openers rattled up the 19 runs required to clinch the series 2-0 at the Harare Sports Club ground. It was India’s first series win outside the subcontinent since their 2-0 triumph against England in 1986, but Sourav Ganguly and his men would not really be too pleased with their efforts on the field today. Although the visitors managed to wrap up the match in two-and-a-half days, they allowed the Zimbabwean lower-order batsmen to hang around for much too long on a track which favoured the seamers. Hamilton Masakadza (71) and Andy Blignaut (84 not out) were the main performers for the hosts as the duo put on a record 116-run seventh-wicket partnership, which helped the home team avoid the ignominy of an innings defeat. Blignaut launched a blistering attack on the Indian bowlers as the hosts scored at a brisk pace, compiling 151 runs in the pre-lunch session. Although Pathan, who captured five more wickets to return with a tally of 12 wickets, and Zaheer Khan troubled the batsmen with their swing, Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble could not make much of an impression. FICCI cautions against feed sharing with DD
New Delhi, September 22 In an advocacy note to the Chairman, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, and Members of the Group of Ministers (GOM) on uplinking and downlinking of TV channels from India — Mr Jaipal Reddy, Mr Kapil Sibal, Mr H.R.Bhardwaj, and Mr Kamal Nath — a FICCI delegation vehemently opposed the idea of mandatory sharing of content with Doordarshan. The FICCI delegation included CEOs and senior representatives of STAR TV, Sony International TV, Zee Telefilms, Ten Sports and ESPN Star Sports. The FICCI note pointed out that “mandatory sports licensing” under the proposed norms for uplinking of TV channels from India would seriously impact the revenues, quality of programming and the investment climate as these will have a direct bearing on popular sports broadcasts such as cricket matches as well as major international events like the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games. FICCI expressed apprehensions that the media industry would be up against anti-competitive forces and this would adversely affect the development of sports, encourage piracy, scale down revenues and stunt the overall growth of the media industry. It claimed that it would reduce the value of sporting properties, adversely affecting sporting federations both within and outside India, thereby substantially reducing the ability of sporting federations to invest in infrastructure to develop sport, and would ultimately impair the remuneration available to sportspersons. Availability of the event on the DTH platform of DD, which can be received in areas outside India, would increase the incidence of piracy and unauthorized access, FICCI claimed. Such a move will financially cripple the sports broadcasting industry in India, since in the absence of “addressability”, no cable operator will come forward to pay any subscription fee for sports channels, once all the key content is shared. The incremental ad revenue from sharing with Doordarshan will not be able to cover even 10-15 per cent of the loss which will be suffered by the undermining of the pay business model. FICCI has urged the government to consider the impact of the proposed move before taking any decision. Since the issue of access is principally in the rural areas where cable TV does not currently have adequate coverage, the problem could be addressed by making private channels who have the rights to share their feed with the low power transmitters (LPTs) of Doordarshan in identified rural areas. This way there could be protection of the subscription revenues of private channels, while at the same time ensuring the social obligation of reaching the homes which do not have access to cable TV. FICCI has suggested that care must also be taken to ensure compliance with Indian and international copyright and other intellectual property laws, international treaties and WTO commitments. |
Leander opts out of singles
New Delhi, September 22 Leander’s decision might turn out to be for the good of the team, as on paper, India were too weak to challenge the formidable Swedes. Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh took out the draw at his residence this morning, picking Prakash against Jonas Bjorkman in the first singles and Rohan against Thomas Johansson in the second singles on the opening day. Leander and Mahesh Bhupathi would meet Bjorkman and Simon Aspelin in the doubles on Saturday. Mahesh Bhupathi said he had no plans to quit the Davis Cup, though he stuck to his stand that there was no need for Leander and me in the team for Asian Zone matches. Meanwhile, the All-India Tennis Association
(AITA) felicitated Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi and AITA executive vice-president Anil Khanna for their achievements in tennis. At the function, organised by AITA president Yashwant Sinha, Leander was honoured with a cash award of Rs 1 lakh for playing a record number of Davis Cup matches, while Mahesh was given a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh for winning nine Grand Slam titles. Anil Khanna, who is also the president of the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association, was felicitated for being elected president of the Asian Tennis Federation, the first Indian to occupy this post. Former International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Ashwani Kumar, who had served the Indian Hockey Federation as its president for over 20 years, and present IOC member Raja Randhir Singh and Olympic silver medallist Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore were also honoured for their contribution to sports. |
Uberoi sisters in doubles semis
Kolkata, September 22 The 682-ranked Uberoi sisters played with authority and better coordination to upstage 158th-ranked Chuang and Fujiwara. In the first set, Shikha and Neha were trailing 1-4 and Chunag and Fujiwara were all set to take the set. But the sisters changed their strategy and played more aggressively cutting down the errors. Neha was superb in the net and the two sisters dominated the show clinching the set 6-4. In the second set, Shikha and Neha were in full command. The Taipei-Japanese duo simply faded away against the combination of power and craft of the Indians and could manage to win just two games.
