Sedate start by Zimbabwe
Bulawayo, September 13 Pathan took out Terrence Duffin (56) and Dion Ebrahim (24) in successive overs as first he won a leg before shout against Duffin and then accepted a return catch from Ebrahim. Harbhajan Singh bowled a rather long spell of 18 overs in the afternoon session, but without luck. Quite a few edges from the bats did not carry to him and once Ebrahim could have been out stumped by a long way, but Dinesh Kaarthick muffed the stumping chance. Skipper Tatenda Taibu once dashed down the track to lift Harbhajan for a six and Heath Streak too forced a few lovely strokes on the onside. Earlier, Zaheer Khan took two wickets to make early inroads into Zimbabwe batting. Zaheer met with his first success when opener Brendon Taylor (13) flicked uppishly off the backfoot and Gautam Gambbir at forward short leg, after a few juggles, accepted the chance. The Baroda paceman also accounted for Hamilton Masakadza (14), who tried to leave a rising delivery on the legside but gloved it to wicketkeeper Kaarthick. Zaheer, despite his success, was troubled by his propensity to transgress the bowling crease and bowled four no-balls in his first four overs. Debutant opener Duffin made an impressive start to his career as he led the Zimbabwe recovery. Ebrahim looked in fine touch and twice drove Anil Kumble down the ground for boundaries. Mahendra rules out probe
Chandigarh, September 13 He also said he had no information about the visit of two officials of the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) to the country as reported in a section of the press. Briefing newspersons, Mr Mahendra said he came to know about the presence of these officials from the media. When asked whether these ICC officials could conduct a probe without the knowledge of the BCCI, he said, "How can I comment on their visit, which may be private." "But if found correct, we will definitely look into the matter and take action against those guilty," added Mr Mahendra. He said earlier also the BCCI had taken action against those found guilty of match-fixing. Muralitharan strikes twice to leave
Bangladesh tottering
Colombo, September 13 Bangladesh, trailing by 182 runs after the first innings, were tottering at 36 for 3 in their second innings when bad light and rain stopped play with 12 overs remaining on the second day today. Skipper Habibul Bashar, who topscored in the first innings with 84, was batting on 13, with Tushar Imran, who had yet to open his account. The tourists walked off still 146 runs behind with only seven wickets in hand. Off-spinner Muralitharan was pressed into the attack in the eighth over and struck with his third delivery, when he bowled debutant Shahriar Nafees (13) with a ‘doosra’. The ball spun sharply into the left-hander and went between the legs before hitting the stumps. Muralitharan then trapped Mohammad Ashraful legbefore with his next delivery to leave Bangladesh struggling to avoid a big defeat. Paceman Lasith Malinga was the other successful bowler when he had Javed Omar caught behind for nine with his first ball. Sri Lanka earlier scored 370 for 9 declared in their first innings in reply to their opponents’ 188, thanks to solid half centuries from Tillakaratne Dilshan (86), Thilan Samaraweera (78) and Mahela Jayawardene (63). Left-arm spinner Mohammad Rafique was the only bowler to test the Sri Lankan batsmen on a slow turning pitch as he finished with 5 for 114, his sixth haul of five or more wickets in an innings. He, however, received no support from fellow-spinner Enamul Haque, who gave away 106 runs in 33 wicketless overs. Resuming at 160 for 3, Sri Lanka batted steadily for more than two sessions before declaring their innings closed immediately after Dilshan’s dismissal. Dilshan was bowled off-stump while attempting to pull debutant seamer Syed Rasel in the first over after Bangladesh took the second new ball. He hit eight fours in his fourth half century. He put his team in a commanding position after Samaraweera and Jayawardene had added 101 for the fourth wicket. Bangladesh, missing strike bowlers Mashrafe Mortaza and Tapash Baisya due to injuries, managed only one wicket in the morning session when Rafique had Jayawardene caught by wicketkeeper Khaled Mashud. Jayawardene, who became the fifth Sri Lankan to complete 5,000 Test runs during his 23rd half century, hit one six and seven fours. Samaraweera batted slowly, adding 45 to his overnight score of 33 in more than three hours. He hit seven fours in his 10th half century before being caught behind off Rafique. Rafique trapped Chaminda Vaas leg before and then had Rangana Herath caught behind. Mushtaq, Saqlain apply for British citizenship
Karachi September 13 However, they still harbour hope of making it to the Pakistani team and hence will desist from appearing for their counties as locals, ‘The News’ reported. “Despite applying for the citizenship, they have opted not to try to appear for their counties as local players, which they can do in their current status as apparently they still harbour hopes of making one final comeback for the Pakistani team,” the daily quoted sources as saying. Pakistan’s former Test bowler Mohammad Akram had got British citizenship and played for Sussex as a local player after settling in England while batsman Hasan Adnan had also played as a local signing for Derbyshire, although he played first-class cricket in Pakistan too. Pakistan cricket captain Inzamam-ul-Haq had indicated that Mushtaq might be considered for a comeback against England in the coming home series because of his outstanding form in county cricket. Saqlain, who had resumed playing competitive cricket after a one-year layoff due to a knee injury, had said he was keen to make a comeback for Pakistan.

Halappa guides Cavaliers to victory
Karachi, September 13 In the second match under lights, the winners opened their account when Mohammed Imran converted a penalty corner in the 18th minute as the side went into the breather with a 1-0 lead. After play resumed, Halappa came up with a field goal in the 46th minute to complete the tally. Falcons could have reduced the margin in the dying minutes but Kashif Ali squandered a penalty stroke. Cavaliers are now tied with Sindh Qalandars at second spot with six points. Earlier, Capital Dynamos overcame Baloch Lions 4-2 in the first match of the day. Dynamos took lead in the third minute when Atiqur Rehman’s rasping hit got deflected by a rival defender before foxing Lions goalkeeper Adrian D’Souza, even though the Indian custodian had another excellent day under the bar. The Dynamos dealt another blow to their rivals within two minutes when player-of-the-match Shahid Rabbani, cashing in on a sloppy rival defence, sounded the board to make it 2-0. Just before the breather, the brittle Lions defence was exposed again as Ishtiaq Ahmad made it 3-0. Attack and counter-attack made it an exciting second half as Lions managed eight penalty corners while Dynamos got 13 even though both the teams showed poor conversion rate. Lions finally reduced the margin in the 56th minute when Zakirullah connected a Shabbir Ahmad hit (3-1) but in the very next minute Shahid Rabbani scoopped it over Adrian D’Souza to score his second and his side’s fourth goal of the match (4-1). After wasting a penalty stroke, Zakirullah scored the second goal for the Lions in the 63rd minute (4-2). Despite the defeat, Adrian D’Souza was once again impressive and the Indian kept Mudassir Ali Khan’s indirect try at bay and then thwarted the effort of his countryman Gagan Ajit Singh from the top of the circle. Gagan was involved in a heated exchange of words with rival players following a rough tackle after which Adnan Hamid was shown a green card.

Punjab Police honours sportspersons, coaches
Phillaur, September 13 Mr Rajdeep Singh Gill, ADGP, Punjab, and Director of the academy was the chief guest on this occasion. The star attraction of this function was Sub-Inspector Manjit Kaur who won two gold medals at the 16th Asian Athletics Championship held recently at Incheon, South Korea. She won a gold medal in 400 metres and also helped her team to set a new meet record in the 4x400 metres relay race. The Indian quartet included Manjit Kaur and another Punjab Police player, ASI Rajwinder Kaur. ASI Navpreet Singh won a silver medal in shot put at the meet while national champion in javelin throw, Inspector Jagdish Bishnoi secured a bronze medal. Upcoming wrestler Palwinder Singh Cheema was honoured for bringing glory to the Punjab Police and the state. Inspector Palwinder won a bronze medal in the 120 kg category (free-style) at the Asian Wrestling Championship-2005 held in Wuhan, China, and then won a gold medal in the free-style and a silver medal in the Greco-Roman style in the Commonwealth Wrestling Championship held early this year in Cape Town, South Africa. Inspector Gurwinder Singh won a gold medal in the Greco-Roman ( 63 kg) in this championship. Pugilist Arun Singh clinched a silver medal in fly-weight category in the Commonwealth Boxing Tournament-2005 in Scotland and Navjot Channa won a gold medal in the Commonwealth Judo Championship-2005 in New Zealand. Navjot could not attend the function. His brother received the prize on his behalf. The coaches — Sukhchain Singh and Jagjit Singh (wrestling), M. S. Dhillon and R. S. Sidhu (athletics), Bhupinder Singh (boxing) and Surinder Singh Sodhi (judo) — who trained these sportspersons were also felicitated on this occasion. Police officers as well as sportspersons were of the firm view that the ‘discouraging’ sports environment in the state was the reason behind the incidents of players ‘disappearing’ while participatIng in tournaments abroad. Reacting to the recent disappearance of six members of a Punjab Police rafting team that had gone to participate in a tournament in the USA, senior police officials and sportspersons said the sports environment in the state and the country was not conducive for growth and development of sportspersons. It was precisely for this reason that many sportspersons had in the past also gone missing in similar fashion. A number of sportspersons and coaches also expressed anguish over the way the committee finalising the Arjuna Awards ignored the name of ace shot putter Bahadur Singh for the Arjuna Award. |
