Development project embroiled in controversy

The development work on some streets in Zone B, which was inaugurated by the Parliamentary Secretary, Mr Surinder Dawer, amidst much fanfare a week ago, has turned into an embarrassment for him with the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation ordering an inquiry following allegations that the streets were in a good condition and did not need any recarpeting.

Petrol price hike resented
Transporters threaten strike on Sept 16
Ludhiana, September 6
Hike in petroleum and diesel prices today was resented by residents and industry. Following the government’s decision effecting a Rs 3 hike in petroleum and Rs 2 hike in diesel rates, the prices have shot up to Rs 47.74 for petroleum and Rs 29.88 for diesel.

Rs 30 lakh for Sarabha memorial
Ludhiana, September 6
The Punjab Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, has released a grant of Rs 30 lakh out of his discretionary quota for the completion of Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha Memorial which is under construction at Sarabha village.

Two Abohar men held for theft bid
Ludhiana, September 6

The city police today claimed to have nabbed two theft suspects soon after they failed to break open a mobile-phone shop on the Threekay Road around 10.30 pm last night. Addressing a press conference here this afternoon, the SP (D) said the arrested duo had been identified as Deepak and Puran, residents of Abohar.
The suspects were paraded before newsmen along with the two knives and a lock-breaking rod of tempered iron. The SP said both had been jointly booked under Sections 457,380 and 511 of the IPC and also separately under the Arms Act.

Punjab Agricultural University today issued a show-cause notice to two officers, asking them why their services should not be terminated for their alleged misconduct.

The Punjab State Veterinary Officers Association has urged the state Animal Husbandry Department to fix realistic targets for vaccination of cattle against foot and mouth diseases and hemorrhagic septicemia, as also to consider the cost factor for inoculation, which was on a higher side.

Car bazaar business hit by pillars

Thanks to the confusion over the green space in Feroze Gandhi Market, about 50 second-hand car dealers along with their over 500 employees, have been rendered jobless. They have been asked not to carry on any trading during the week days. They can do it on Sundays only.

SAD-BJP consensus over MC bypoll likely

The Shiromani Akali Dal and the Bharatiya Janata Party are likely to reach a consensus over a common candidate for Ward No. 66, where the byelection is to be held on September 18.

Odissa State Medical University, Ukraine, is learnt to have agreed in principle to grant recognition in some postgraduate courses of medicine to some Indian institutions. However, the university will ensure that all international norms of medical education are followed in such institutions.

Soap firm ordered to pay Rs 15,000
Ludhiana, September 6
The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed M/s Peshawar Soaps and Chemicals Works, Patiala, and M/s New Bathla Karyana Store, Jail Road, Ludhiana, to pay a compensation of Rs 15,000 to an aggrieved consumer on the charges of launching a misleading promotional sale scheme for ‘’ Kesh Nikhar” soap.

BVM School boxer strikes gold

Shri Ram Sikka, a student of Bharatiya Vidya Mandir School, Kitchlu Nagar, Ludhiana, got the better of Manpreet Singh of Government Senior Secondary School, Machhiwara, to win a gold medal in the Ludhiana District Inter-School Boxing Championship organised by the Education Department on September 5 at Khanna.

Giving this information, Ms Manju Chawla, Principal of the college, said the girls brought laurels to their alma mater by clinching seven medals, including two gold and four silver and one bronze, during this meet.
