Servant hacked to death in village

A drunk farmer allegedly hacked to death a 40-year-old man in a cattle shed at Rani Majra village, near here, late last night. The police arrested Karnail Singh on the charge of murder later this evening.

Traffic, power supply hit in city
Chandigarh, August 28
High velocity winds followed by rain wreaked havoc in the city today. Normal life was thrown out of gear for about an hour. Trees were uprooted and power lines damaged at several places causing disruption of traffic and power in various Sectors.

Scribe, SHO held for conspiracy

The special investigation team of the Punjab Police investigating a rape case registered at the Nayagaon police station arrested Gautam Dheer, a senior correspondent of the Indian Express, along with Jagjit Singh, former SHO of Kurali, on charges of criminal conspiracy late tonight.

Gurdev Singh, an 80-year-old man from Kaleke in Moga district, is a harassed man today. Even after completion of his life term under the TADA Act, the Punjab Government is dragging its feet on his release. In fact, Gurdev Singh is not alone if the claims of a human rights organisation — Lawyers for Human Rights International — are any indication. It alleged that the Punjab Government had failed to release at least nine prisoners, who had already undergone their sentences under the Act.

The local police has seized 50 bottles of liquor from a car while the suspect managed to escape. In a separate case, one person was arrested for carrying five bottles of liquor illegally.
