Punjab varsity to have new basketball courts
G.S. Paul
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh: Another feather in the cap of Panjab University’s sports infrastructure is being added with two modern floodlights-lit basketball courts and a handball court coming up on its campus.

About 1,450 luxes — a technical word to define brightness of light — are required for staging the matches. A total of four poles for each court would have to be erected for the floodlights. An amount of Rs 5.6 lakh on the handball court and another Rs 3.3 lakh on the basketball court are expected to be spent on the floodlights.

The handball court is roughly 40 metres long and 20 metres wide whereas the basketball court is 28 metres in length and 15 metres wide.

Mr Toor said , “Now that the administrative approval in this regard has been granted, the official permission will reach us in a week’s time. We need just 60 days to install the lights.”

Asked about the already installed lights on the courts, he said, “These will be fixed in the adjoining parks and passages.”

Describing the specifications of the courts, he said the new courts would be made six-inch above the ground level, just to keep soil and rainwater away from the surface of the courts.

“The existing courts were in very shabby conditions and were unfit for the use. The cement floor of the courts was badly damaged and had been a victim of neglect for the past 40 years. Our team has been bagging winners position in various intervarsity handball tournaments for the past 10 years and this untidy court desperately need revamping,” said handball coach Narinder Singh.

Panjab University is among the best sports-oriented institutions. It has built up infrastructure for badminton, football, hockey, judo, athletics, etc.

“We carry out our training on professional grounds, and try our best to provide the best available infrastructure to players for practice. We have glorious record in sports arena and so we cannot afford to let our players compromise on any grounds,” described Mr Toor.
