Avoid pampering kids: psychiatrists
Asha Ahuja

Ludhiana, June 25
“I am not going to that school any more. You have to change my school,” threatened a little two and- half-year-old Gudiya. Her grouse against the old school was that not air conditioned. She has been brought up by her parents in airconditioned luxury that now she cannot bear the thought of studying in a school that has merely fans.

The fault is that of her parents who saw to it that she has airconditioned comfort at home and even while travelling in a airconditioned car. When Gudiya goes to the bazaar , she wants her parents to take her to airconditioned shops only. Her grandmother Harjas was shocked beyond wits when Gudiya lay down on the floor and threw a tantrum and refused to go to school. She was horrified that children can really make their parents dance on their fingertips.

Discipline, simple living and high thinking were the most important principles in bringing up children and she was surprised hew her tiny grand-daughter was Throwing tantrums, forcing her parents to yield to her whims.

There are many children like Gudiya who, because of pampering and indulgence of their parents, have become softies and cannot bear the heat. These children are like fish without water. No wonder so many airconditioned school have come up. The parents do not mind paying high fees charged by these schools. Is it healthy to be staying in lap of airconditioned comfort all the time?

Dr Rajeev Gupta, a city based psychiatrist, does not think so. He says, “Actually the more comforts we provide to children, the more we spoil them. The child will simply collapse if comforts are withdrawn under stress. For such comfort-loving children, parents would act like cocoons giving them security but what happens when they are gone.”

Ms Malkani, a grandmother, who has raised a number of her own children and grandchildren says,” We saw to it that children got comfortable, but they had to be outdoors to enjoy fresh air and the beauty of nature. They were taught to be disciplined and exposed to hardships like doing their own chores to understand dignity of labour. I wonder how these children brought in the lap of luxury are going to turn up”
