Volunteers use puppets to warn against AIDS
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 25
Doctors from the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, today counselled 55 adolescents from Colony No 5 on the ill effects of drugs. They were holding a drug de-addiction camp at Colony No 5 where Yuvsatta in association with the State AIDS Control Society, Chandigarh, and GMCH also organised a puppet show and an HIV/AIDS awareness camp today.

To begin with, a team of doctors held a workshop for adolescents who were engaged in an open interaction and were educated on the topic by way of lectures on drug abuse. The team led by Dr Srikant Basu, Head, Paediatrics Department, explained various types of drugs used, their effects and the remedial measures to defeat their unhealthy impact.

Dr Attrey Ganguli apprised the youngsters of the free services of the Health Department and urged them to avail of the same instead of waiting to get treated till the disease has worsened. Later, an HIV/AIDS awareness camp for migratory labourers was organised at the same venue. The highlight was the camp was a puppet show on the topic by Prakash Puppeteers. About 250 people participated in this programme where free AIDS awareness literature and condoms were also distributed.

Speaking on the occasion, Ashwani Kumar, Colony No. 5, in charge of Yuvsatta’s project, asked migratory labourers to maintain a healthy lifestyle by keeping their body and surroundings clean and disease-free.

He stressed the use of condoms, while warning the listeners that the use of condoms alone cannot guarantee protection against AIDS. “For a risk free life it is best to be faithful to a partner,” the volunteer admonished.

Stressing the need for an effective communication material on HIV/AIDS Pramod Sharma, coordinator of Yuvsatta released the fifth edition of RAKSHAK (AIDS) — an awareness bulletin of Yuvasatta.

RAKSHAK contains information, education material on HIV/AIDS and articles on responsible/safe sexual behaviour and effective prevention of STDs. The booklet is unique in the sense that it features articles by people from the slums.
