2 city pacers for MRF academy
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 23
The city seems to be emerging as the nursery for fast bowlers. Close on the heels of the selection of V.R.V. Singh for a training camp in Brisbane, Australia, two other city lads have entered the big league by being selected for training by the Chennai- based MRF Pace Academy.

The Punjab Cricket Association held trials at its stadium on June 19 to select fast bowlers for the academy. Over 110 participants, from all over Punjab and Chandigarh, turned up put their best foot forward in front of T.A. Shekhar, former fast bowler and currently chief coach of the academy. However, only eight speedsters were selected in the trials.

The selection did not come as a surprise for this talented duo of Nipun Gupta and Vikas Chauhan.

Nipun Gupta (16) was given the chance to bowl 20 times in the trials to judge his talent. He drew the attention of selectors with his breezing in-cutter delivery on which the batsman got injured and left the crease. “My forte is outswing bowling and I use it as a main weapon”, said this strapping six-footer, who is fan of Australian pacer Glenn McGrath.

A product of St. John Academy, Sector 26, this young boy has represented Panchkula district in the inter-district tournament held at Barwala and Bhiwani last year. He also participated in the fast bowling competition and was named the ESPN Speed Star at DAV, Sector 8, in 2003 in which he threw the ball at a speed of 122 km per hour.

Aiming to be the member of Indian team as a fast bowler, 19-year-old Vikas Chauhan, believes in hard work and dedication to achieve his goal. A gifted pacer Chauhan got the second position in the ESPN Speed Star competition for speed bowling, with his 126 km per hour pace. He also represented ‘India A’ team (under-19 category) in Commonwealth Cricket Tournament held at Gurgaon in 2003. He was also the member of the Chandigarh district team in the under 22 section, which participated in inter-district tournament last year.

An admirer of ‘Rawalpindi Express’ Shoaib Akhtar, Chauhan, a BA first year student, is undergoing training at DAV Coaching Centre, Sector 10, under the guidance of renowned cricketer, Yograj Singh.

SGFI infighting may jeopardise young careers
Our Sports Reporter

Chandigarh, June 23
The career of Indian school table tennis players, currently attending a national camp in the city, may end right before it takes off as a parallel federation of the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) is reportedly trying to tarnish the image of the SGFI.

It may be recalled that the SGFI headed by its president Kabita Roy Choudhri had recently got an invitation from the Department of Physical Education, Ministry of Education, Malaysia, to send a team for the third Asian Schools TT Championship at Malacca (Malaysia) to be held from July 2 to 9.

Accordingly, the trials were held on June 16 in the city and 14 players were short-listed. Now that the camp was on, president of the parallel unit Satpal was allegedly trying to create a negative image of the SGFI with various officials in the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and requesting them to not allow the team to leave for the meet, as claimed by SGFI secretary general P.S. Chhabra.

Mr Chhabra said had the other unit been sports friendly, it would not have done so in the interest of young children.

Ms Choudhri also rang up Chandigarh Tribune from Kolkata and said Rupa Saini, who is from the Punjab unit, had been trying to mislead the ministry to not grant permission to the team on the basis of an ongoing court case.

Ms Choudhri said the Punjab and Haryana High Court had on December 17, 2004 quashed the elections held on February 25, 2004 at Pune by referring the matter back to a trial court in Chandigarh.

Sources, however, corroborated that an official from the Punjab Education Department had been deputed by the group led by Satpal to create confusion in the Sports Authority of India, Delhi, during the ongoing coaching camp.

Meanwhile, in a letter to the Executive Director, SAI, Mr Chhabra has urged him to clear Indian schools TT team for the meet, which will give exposure to youngsters and enhance India’s reputation in the international arena.
