Students take BEd entrance exam

More than 4,800 students today took the BEd entrance examination at almost 20 different centres set up in various colleges by Panjab University in Ludhiana district. According to the reports, the test was conducted smoothly at all the centres and no complaint of any sort was received.

Centres were set up at Government College for Women, SCD Government College, GGN Khalsa College, Arya College, SDP College for Women, Ramgarhia College, Guru Nanak Khalsa College and Malwa College. This time Panjab University was entrusted the job for conducting the BEd entrance test.

Ms Reetinder, a BEd aspirant said that students faced no problem at the centre at Government College for Women. "Paper started on time and the questions came from within the syllabus. We are all happy and eagerly waiting for the results now," she said.

Mr Tarsem Bahia, coordinator of one of the zones, said that the exam was conducted peacefully. The students, who had not given roll numbers, were issued on the spot roll numbers. No case of cheating, violence, complaint regarding question paper and no case of impersonation came to light.

To beat the scorching heat, at some of the centres arrangement of drinking water was made for the attendants and parents of students. "We are being accommodated well today", said one of the parents, who had come from Khanna with his daughter.

It may be mentioned here that the BEd students had to face great difficulties while collecting their roll numbers on June 17 and 18. About half of them were denied the same as there were a lot of discrepancies on part of the university authorities. Many of them had protested against the callous attitude of the university.

College teachers hold rally

The Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union today organised a state-level rally in front of the office of the DPI (colleges) at Chandigarh to press the state government to accept its pending demands and fight with the crisis concerning the future of higher education in Punjab.

Office-bearers of the PCCTU, including Prof R S Brar , state president, PCCTU, Prof Jagwant Singh, secretary, Dr Parminder Singh, area secretary, Panjab University, Prof P K Sharma , area secretary, Punjabi University, Prof H B Walia, vice-president, Prof V K Sareen, area secretary, Guru Nanak Dev University, Prof Prashar, finance secretary, addressed the rally.

They urged the government to give a serious thought to the demands of teachers that include the implementation of the recommendations of Johal Committee, merger of DA, implementation of 95 per cent grant-in-aid scheme and pay parity for the DPE's and librarians.

They also demanded the timely release of grants so that the teachers get their salary regularly. They urged the Education Minister and Deputy Chief Minister, Ms Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, to set up a committee to tackle the sensitive issues relating to higher education.

Campus interviews for students

Ludhiana, June 22
ICICI Bank conducted campus interviews for distance education students of the Punjab Technical University here today. The interviews, that were held at Quest Infosys, the regional learning and facilitation centre for PTU, were conducted for MBA students.

“Students from 27 distance learning centres, including those at Mullanpur, Samrala, Sirhind and Raikot, participated in the interviews in the area of investment banking,” said Ms Monica Dang, manager corporate training and placements, Quest Infosys.

She said six students had been shortlisted and would be placed at different branches of the bank.

“Our placement cell has placed over 300 students so far in various organisations. Besides, nearly 250 students from the Ludhiana zone have been selected as computer teachers in government schools in the state,” said Mr Harinder Pal Singh, Zonal Head.

Kids’ pyjama party

Ludhiana, June 22
Kid Zee Rainbow School organised a pyjama party on the school premises here today. All the kids were dressed up in their night suits. The whole atmosphere was giving a night picture in the school.

All the kids were dancing on the tunes of "Battyan bhuja do, ab neend nahi aayegi" They switched off the lights, pulled down curtains and played hide and seek.

Some of the children acted as monsters in the night scene. They brushed their teeth and went off to sleep while wishing good night and sweet dreams to their friends and the school staff.

Staff members of the school were also present. They were telling bed-time stories to the children. The atmosphere was full of joy, fun, laughter and excitement as the event was new. Children instead of keeping awake were asked to sleep.

Coordinator of the school, Ms Shivani, said aim of the summer camp was to boost the energy of the growing child towards creative pursuits.

Their aim was providing a forum where children could take part in different curricular activities, she added.

Green XI suffer first defeat

Ludhiana, June 22
Captain Salil Verma of Coaching Centre Yellow XI scored 65 runs and guided his team to a seven-wicket win over Coaching Centre Green XI on the fourth day of the ongoing ninth edition of the Chaman Lal Malhotra Cup Cricket Tournament (u-14) being played at the Arya College grounds here today. This was Green XI’s first defeat as they had already won their first two matches.

Batting first, Coaching Centre Green XI scored 145 runs for the loss of one wicket in the stipulated 30 overs. Sunny Pandey remained unbeaten on 40, while Paras Mehandiratta contributed 37 runs. Gagan made 32.

For Coaching Centre Yellow XI, the lone successful bowler was Ketan Dhir who grabbed one for 24 runs.

Green XI’s total proved to be a meagre one as Yellow XI’s batsmen went on surpass the target in the 26th over after losing three wickets. Salil top scored with 65 runs and Abhinav chipped in with 24 runs. Dipin Chitkara, a six-year-old boy, faced 33 deliveries and scored five runs. Exhibiting tremendous temperament, Dipin, a Class I student, kept his wicket intact for overs. He along with Salil also added 50 runs for the second wicket. Ketan Dhir contributed 11 runs.

For Green XI, Akshit Goel, Paras Mehndiratta and Drone Kanish shared the spoils, taking one wicket each conceding 28, 29 and 12 runs, respectively. Mr Subhash Arora, joint secretary, tournament committee, was the chief guest.

In another match played yesterday, Akhil Goel, captain of the Coaching Centre Blue XI, led from front, hitting a century (126) and was ably assisted by Shivam Passi who too hit a ton (105) and enabled their side to register a huge win of 235 runs over Coaching Centre Yellow XI.

Flood-protection steps reviewed

The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Anurag Verma, has directed officials of the various departments to gear up for any eventuality during the ensuing monsoon season. He was presiding over a special meeting of the SDMs and other officials to review the flood-protection arrangements at Bachat Bhavan today.

Mr Verma said the vulnerable points on the Dhusi bandh alongside the Sutlej had already been identified. These included Dhulawal, Mattewara, Kasabad Seed Farm, Khera Bet and Madhepur. He said to keep a strict vigil on all these points, patrolling by junior engineers, revenue officials and a police patrolling party (with wireless sets) would be carried out on a daily basis so that information regarding any danger to the bandh could be given to the officers concerned to take immediate remedial measures.

The Deputy Commissioner said that round-the-clock Flood Control Rooms were being set up at the Mini Secretariat with phone number: 2401358, Executive Engineer Drainage’s office with phone number 2409043 and at subdivisions in the offices of the SDMs where all information relating to the rains, release of water in the river, and flood-protection arrangements would be available.

He said these Flood Control Rooms would start functioning from July 1. He directed the Civil Surgeon to keep ready a sufficient number of medical teams at the PHCs situated in the villages near to the bandh and make available a sufficient stock of life-saving medicines.

He also asked the Deputy Director, Animal Husbandry, to keep a sufficient stock of cattle feed to meet any kind of eventuality and also constitute teams of veterinary doctors in the veterinary hospitals and dispensaries situated in the villages along the Dhusi bandh to provide medical facilities, a sufficient stock of kerosene oil and food packets for any kind of emergency

Mr Verma asked the SDMs and police officers to prepare lists of divers available in the Police Department and the public for evacuation purposes, in case of floods in any area.

He also asked the SDMs to identify government school buildings in the villages near the bandh which could be used as temporary shelters for the evacuated people in case of any breach or flood and asked the DEO (S) and the DEO (P) to ensure that minor repairs in the buildings were carried out wherever needed at the earliest.
