PUDA’s final blow to Passey Nagar residents
Issues eviction notices for ring road

With the Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority, (PUDA) issuing eviction notices to thousands of families in local Passey Nagar and Phullanwal village to acquire land for construction of ring road around the city, the axe hanging on the residents for the past two years is finally going to fall on them.

9 members of three gangs nabbed
Ludhiana, June 9
After busting a notorious gang of rickshaw pullers, who looted people, the city police today announced the busting of a gang which looted people travelling in auto-rickshaws. Three members of this gang have been arrested.

Plot to kill Lalla’s murder accused
Deceased’s brother held
Ludhiana, June 9
The police has arrested a Jalandhar-based man belonging to the Lalla gang for allegedly conniving with some gangsters to kill Raman Rana, leader of a rival gang and prime accused in the Lalla murder case.

Sportsman’s widow refused ‘promised’ financial aid
Ludhiana, June 9
Ms Rachna, widow of Harish Chander, former national badminton champion (doubles), has sought financial help from the Ludhiana District Badminton Association (LDBA). In a letter written to the president of the LDBA, Mr Chand Kapoor, Ms Rachna has asked for the money which the LDBA has reportedly collected last year to assist her and the late sportsman’s small son.
Addressing mediapersons here yesterday, Ms Rachna alleged that last year when her husband died in a road accident in Kolkata, office-bearers of the LDBA promised to give her financial assistance.

2 held for attack on trucker
Raikot (Ahmedgarh), June 9
The local police today nabbed the two truck drivers who had attempted to kill another driver, and taken away Rs 3.45 lakh and his truck on the Raikot-Sarabha road, near here, last night.

PAU students decide to end exam boycott
Ludhiana, June 9
The protesting students of the Punjab Agricultural University here have decided to end the boycott of the exams following a meeting with the authorities. A spokesman of the Punjab Agricultural University Students’ Union (PAUSA) said here today that the talks at the meeting were heading in a positive direction.

One killed, 2 hurt in clash
Amloh, June 9
One person was killed, two seriously injured, in a clash between two groups on Wednesday night at Matorda village near here. On the statement of Manoj Kumar, brother of deceased Randhir Singh, the police has registered an FIR against two brothers, Chamkaur Singh and Bittu u/s 34, 302, 307 IPC but no arrest has been made so far.

Govt ignoring farmers’ plight, alleges BKU
Ludhiana, June 9
The Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) while criticising the government for allegedly ignoring the long-pending demands of the farmers, has threatened to launch a mass agitation in the state. The demands of the farmers and the modalities of the agitation would be discussed at a meeting of the union being convened here on June 10.

Mr Surinder Pal Sood has once again been elected the senior vice-president of the Municipal Council, Doraha, while Mr Gurnam Singh was elected vice-president on Wednesday.

Applications for bravery awards sought
Ludhiana, June 9
Mr Anurag Verma, Deputy Commissioner, Ludhiana, has invited the nominations for National Awards for Bravery and Meritorious Service for Children-2005 in respect of incidents of bravery having occurred between July 1, 2004, to June 30, 2005, supported by sufficient proofs, including clippings of newspapers, magazine, etc by July 15.

Block Development and Panchayat Officer Davinder Singh, who has been under treatment of burn injuries in DMC, Ludhiana, for the past 13 days, died yesterday. He was 45.

Action against woman for lodging false complaint
Mandi Ahmedgarh, June 9
The police has decided to proceed against a local woman who had lodged a false complaint against a youth and his parents alleging abduction of her daughter four months ago. Contrary to allegations leveled by her against the accused the girl had deposed in the court that she had married the youth willingly after running from her home as her parents opposed their marriage.

Undertrial escapes, 2 cops booked
Jagraon, June 9
An undertrial is alleged to have fled from the Raikot police station. An Assistant Sub-Inspector and a Head Constable have been booked under Sections 323 and 324 of the Indian Penal Code in this connection.

Cut import duties, says chamber
Ludhiana, June 9
The Apex Chamber of Commerce and Industry said today that steel producers became speculative and were effecting unnecessary increase in prices. “Even before the enforcement of cut, steel prices have risen by about Rs 1,000 per tonne,” said Mr P.D. Sharma, president of the chamber.

ITI students intensify agitation

Students of the local ITI today held a protest rally and raised anti-government, anti-police slogans at the ITI, Ghumar Mandi, here. Baljinder Kaur, an office-bearer of the Punjab Students Union (Randhawa), alleged that they were being pressurised by the police to stop the protests and agitations.

Toppers to be honoured
Ludhiana, June 9
Mr Jagdish Bajaj , president of Shri Gyan Sthal Mandir Sabha (regd), Chowk Subhani Building said in a press note that the sabha had decided to honour the students of both classes X and XII of the CBSE and the Punjab School Education Board, who have secured more than 90 per cent marks.

Need for awareness against AIDS
Ludhiana, June 9
The Civil Surgeon, Dr Rajinder Kaur, today called upon people to maintain a strict vigil against AIDS and to take preventive measures against this killer disease. Inaugurating a two day training course for axillary nurse midwives (ANMs) at the district training centre here, she said that this infectious disease was caused by various factors like transfusion of infected blood, sharing of hypodermic needles and unsafe sex.

Dr S.S Dhir, SMO, Sahnewal, along with Dr Sandhu, Zonal Malaria Officer and Dr A.S. Chawla, District Epidemologist, launched an anti- malaria campaign at Daba, yesterday.

Free camp by Hero DMC on June 12

A free medical camp would be organised at Samrala Surgical Centre here on June 12. A team of doctors, led by Dr G.S. Wander, Chief Cardiologist at Hero DMC Heart Institute (HDHI), would conduct the examination of patients, who would also be provided the facility of free ECG and blood sugar test at this occasion.
