ITI students intensify agitation

Ludhiana, June 9
Students of the local ITI today held a protest rally and raised anti-government, anti-police slogans at the ITI, Ghumar Mandi, here.
Baljinder Kaur, an office-bearer of the Punjab Students Union (Randhawa), alleged that they were being pressurised by the police to stop the protests and agitations.

“The police even tried to arrest the student leaders but they failed to do so. Our agitation against the privatisation of education and reinstatement of Principal Tejinder Singh continues. Students are to take their exams also, after attending our classes, we continue with our protest,” said Baljinder Kaur.

The agitating students alleged that the police threatened to lathicharge the students, who had boycotted the classes for half day. Baljinder Kaur said, “Instead of initiating a dialogue to solve the problem, the government tried to use police force to stop the struggle.”

Meanwhile, the students also blocked Gill Road demanding recruitment of permanent staff, reinstatement of Mr Tejinder Singh and withdrawal of the decision of privatising ITIs. The members, who addressed the students, included Mr Jagjit Singh, Mr Balbir Singh, Mr Navdeep Jodhan, Mr Harnam Singh, Mr Jaswant Singh and Ms Gurjit Kaur.

Fiesta for kids at BCM School

Ludhiana, June 9
The summer camp at B.C.M. School, Dugri, is the fiesta time for kids. The camp that aims at a creative utilisation of summer vacations started on June 1 and will be concluded on June 15. Workshops like computer, classical dance, western dance, art and craft, personality development, karate and various sports are in full swing.

Around 200 students from classes 1st to VIII are participating. Conversation skills, table manners, phone manners, public speaking and confidence building are the forte of personality development classes.

Dr Vandna Shahi, Principal said, “The times have changed now and the kids too want their creativity to be explored and used in an impressive way. Summer camp is a way that allows them to utilise their time effectively because otherwise in routine life they can’t afford to spend 2-3 hours at a stretch for these leisurely activities. The camp aims at overall grooming of the kids and making them more confident.”

Martial art training for students: According to the Director and Founder Principal of the Spring Dale Senior Secondary Public School, Ms Avinash Kaur Walia, every person should know how to defend himself so it is very important for students to learn ‘martial art’. The school has thus appointed Mr Rajnish M.P.Ed, for giving training of ‘martial art’ to the students.

Good results: Students of Sikh Missionary Public School, Salem Tabri, Ludhiana, got good results in the Class X examination. Out of 29 students, 21 students got 1st division and rest of the students got II division. Surinder Kaur has topped the school by securing 538 out of 650 marks. Mandeep Kaur stood second by securing 503 marks.

BVM workshops: On the second last day of the workshops at Bhartiya Vidya Mandir, students and teachers are busy giving final touch to their work in the following hobby classes.

In Shishu Vatika tiny tots of K.G. class made beautiful pots with mirrors. In the craft section, they learnt making toys, teddy bears and pillows of different shapes. In the art section, they learnt preparing mural painting, poster decoration, photo framing, and collage work.

In beauty culture, the students learnt about self-grooming. The students and teachers of different hobby classes are busy decorating their stalls for the final show to be held on June 10.

Toppers to be honoured

Ludhiana, June 9
Mr Jagdish Bajaj , president of Shri Gyan Sthal Mandir Sabha (regd), Chowk Subhani Building said in a press note that the sabha had decided to honour the students of both classes X and XII of the CBSE and the Punjab School Education Board, who have secured more than 90 per cent marks. The function would be held on June 12 between 9am to 12 noon on the premises.

Need for awareness against AIDS

Ludhiana, June 9
The Civil Surgeon, Dr Rajinder Kaur, today called upon people to maintain a strict vigil against AIDS and to take preventive measures against this killer disease.
Inaugurating a two day training course for axillary nurse midwives (ANMs) at the district training centre here, she said that this infectious disease was caused by various factors like transfusion of infected blood, sharing of hypodermic needles and unsafe sex.

“Since the disease has no cure, prevention is the only answer to it, she said.” The programme officer, Dr V.K. Kakkar, district health officer, said that the ANMs would be imparted training on creating awareness about the disease and preventive steps against it. Dr Ajit Singh Chawla, district epidemiologist, Dr Charanjit Singh, Assistant Civil Surgeon, Dr Manorama Awasthy, District Family Welfare Officer, Dr Kuldip Kaur Sahni, District Immunisation Officer and Ms Paramjit Kaur Litt, among others, would interact with the trainees.

Anti-malaria campaign launched

Dr S.S Dhir, SMO, Sahnewal, along with Dr Sandhu, Zonal Malaria Officer and Dr A.S. Chawla, District Epidemologist, launched an anti- malaria campaign at Daba, yesterday.

“Residents of the area, a majority of which is the migrant class, were educated about various water-borne disease as diarrhoea, dysentry, jaundice, gastroenteritis, worm infestation, viral, sore throat, etc and their epidemic proportions, said Dr S.S. Dhir, SMO, Sahnewal.

“They were also educated about the importance of cleanliness. They were told about the research conducted by the National Institute of Communicable Diseases in which it has been discovered that 40 per cent of the diseases can be overcome by regular scrubbing and washing of hands,” he added.

A total of 427 patients were examined by a team of doctors, including Dr Puneet Juneja, and Dr Sudesh, orthopaedicians, Dr Ramaninder Kaur, gynaecologolist, Dr Neel Rattan, medical surgeon and Dr Kaushal, surgeon. A door-to-door survey was also conducted. Immunisation camp was also arranged and the residents were provided DRS packets and chlorine tablets the patients were provided medical aid fee of cost.

“In this month in Sahnewal and the surrounding areas, too, we will launch such campaigns in village,” Dr Dhir added.

Free camp by Hero DMC on June 12

A free medical camp would be organised at Samrala Surgical Centre here on June 12. A team of doctors, led by Dr G.S. Wander, Chief Cardiologist at Hero DMC Heart Institute (HDHI), would conduct the examination of patients, who would also be provided the facility of free ECG and blood sugar test at this occasion.

A similar medical camp to render free cardiac consultation will be organised at civil courts camps at Malerkotla on June 11, which would be coordinated by Dr Naved Aslam, caardiologist.

Dr Wander, said here today, said that for a vast majority of the rural population in the state, the cost of health care was a major restraint in the way of professional medical assistance, particularly in cardiac diseases. With the aim of making available latest techniques of treatment to members of public, the HDHI had been holding such medical camps on a regular basis.

Karan to lead Ludhiana cricket team

Ludhiana, June 9
Karan Goel has been selected to lead the Ludhiana team ( u-22 years) in the Punjab State Inter-District Cricket Tournament to be organised by the Punjab Cricket Association from June 11.

According to Mr Vinod Chitkara, general secretary, Ludhiana District Cricket Association, the following 16 members Ludhiana team has been picked up at a coaching session conducted for the 24 probables selected by the association during the trials on Arya College ground on June 3. Ludhiana play their first match at Chandigarh against the Minor Districts Zone A on June 11 and 12.

The members of the team are: Karan Goel, Dushyant Kohli, Chinton Sehgal, Yogesh, Sanjay Kumar, Gaurav Kumar, Ashish Sehgal, Tarun Passi, Gurpreet Khaira, Rattan Bricher, Lok Raj, Pankaj Kumar, Karan Puri, Aashish Vinayak, Sushyant Kohli and Vishal Passi.

Former Punjab Ranji player, Balkrishan has been appoined manager of the team.

International cager bereaved

Ludhiana, June 9
Mr Balwinder Singh Sahi, father of international basketball player and the member of the present Indian basketball team, Talwinder Singh, died, following a cardiac arrest, here this morning.

Balwinder Singh (50) was working as head ticket collector with the Railways and posted at Ludhiana. He had represented the Railways in many national athletic meets and secured positions in the decathlon and long jump events. He is survived by wife and two sons.

The body was cremated at the Model Town Extension cremation ground in the evening. His funeral was attended by Mr Gurpreet Singh Toor, SP and president, Ludhiana District Basketball Association, Mr Teja Singh Dhaliwal, secretary, Punjab Basketball Association, Mr Sohan Lal Lotey, District Sports Officer, Arjuna awardee Tara Singh, secretary, Punjab Weightlifting Association, coaches of the Punjab Sports Department.
