Online CME for dentists today
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, May 21
Ludhiana will be among 15 other cities in the country, along with Colombo in Sri Lanka and Dubai in the UAE, where an innovative online continuing medical education (CME) programme will be conducted for the first time in CMCH auditorium here on the afternoon of May 22. Dr James Jesse would present his lecture live from the USA while Dr Shavir from Mumbai would join him using the latest ‘centra’ technology.

Dr Vivek Saggar, regional coordinator dental education (Dental Ed), informed that this lecture would be first in the series of 12 such lectures, to be organised every month over the next one year in collaboration with the Indian Academy of Intradisciplinary Dentistry (IAID).

In addition to the benefit of updating their knowledge and apprising themselves with latest developments in the field of dentistry, the attending dental professionals would also get a certificate from the University of California at Los Angeles in the USA.

Stressing the need for a continuous process of upgrading to keep pace with times, Dr Saggar said that techniques were changing very fast in today’s modern world. However, the busy schedule of professionals stood in the way of their travelling within and outside the country to attend CMEs. “With this in view, these innovative on- line CMEs are being organised to enable the dental surgeons to interact with national and international doyens in the profession of dentistry.”

The lecture would commence at 2 p.m. sharp and entry is free for dental professionals.

Patients told about kidney problems, treatment
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, May 21
In a “patient education programme” on advanced kidney diseases organised at Deepak Hospital here today, senior nephrologist Dr Rajan Isaacs and hospital dietician Ms Ritika Lamba apprised the patients with the nature of their underlying problems, the dietary restriction that were needed and the dialysis or kidney transplantation.

The patients and their family members were also told that some of the common medicines used in routine as self-medication could seriously damage their kidneys. At times such kind of self-medication could lead to huge loss of money and sometimes could even take the life of the critically ill patient. The programme was attended by approximately 200 patients and their attendants.

Dr Rajan Isaacs focused on the functions of kidney, causes of kidney failure, symptoms of kidney diseases, treatment options for patients suffering from kidney disease, types of dialysis, common complications that happened in kidney failure and the situations in which dialysis was helpful. Besides this, patients were also explained about continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (home dialysis) and kidney transplantation.

Ms Lamba gave an in-depth idea to patients on dietary restrictions in kidney failure and ways to make food tastier in spite of all the restrictions. This was followed by an open question and answer session where individual problems of patients were discussed and addressed.

Dr Isaacs claimed that the institution was one of the leading centres in care of patients suffering from all types of kidney diseases. “It is equipped with latest dialysis machines and presently doing over 1000 dialyses per month. Besides this the nephrology unit is well recognised for its laparoscopic and endo-urological surgeries.” He said the hospital had also started a kidney help line service (phone no. 0161-2451500) for the patients through which the patients could directly get in touch with kidney specialists and discuss their problems relating to kidney disease, diet and medication.
