AIDS awareness camp

Mohali, May 21
Members of the Disabled Persons Welfare Organisation, Punjab, organised an AIDS awareness camp in Nayagaon village near Chandigarh. More than 250 persons attended the camp.

Mr Paramdeep Singh Bhabat, president of the organisation, said it should be obligatory for a couple to undergo a blood test before marriage to be sure that none of them was suffering from AIDS. He added that adolescents should be made aware of the disease.

The camp was inaugurated by Mr Narinder Bhatia and Mr Sunil Ahuja. They appreciated the move of the organization. Mr Dharam Pal Rana, general secretary of the organisation, said parents should feel free to educate their wards about this disease.

Mr Deepak Rohela, vice-president, told that people should use disposable syringes when required. He added that they should insist that barbers use fresh blades for shaving. He pointed out that while visiting dentists one should be careful that sterilized apparatus is used by the doctors.

Chandigarh team wins Markan trophy

Chandigarh, May 21
The Chandigarh district team won the finals of the M.L. Markan Under-17 Inter-district tournament after beating Patiala district at the Punjab Cricket Association stadium here today. The Chandigarh team won the match on the basis of the Ist innings lead.

Chandigarh reumed their innings from 127 for 2 in 36 overs and put on huge 419 runs with the help of centuries by Himanshu Chawla (123) and Vaibhav (104).

Earlier, in the Ist innings, Chandigarh made 315 runs in 85.2 overs. In reply, the Patiala team could score only 271 runs in the first innings.

Brief scores: Chandigarh (Ist innings) 315 all out in 85.2 overs.

Patiala (Ist innings) 271 all out in 79.4 overs.

Chandigarh (IInd innings) 419 for 8 (Himanshu Chawla 123, Vaibhav 104, Amitoz Singh 3 for 79, Rajwinder Singh 3 for 121).

Roller skaters honoured

Chandigarh, May 21
To honour the Indian Roller Skating team for winning the silver trophy in the 11th Asian Roller Skating Championship, a facilitation function “Vijay Samaroh” was organised at the skating rink, KB DAV Senior Secondary Public School, Sector 7, here today.

Mr Krishan Mohan, Home Secretary cum Education Secretary, honoured the men and women skating team.

The president of the Roller Skating Federation of India, Mr Pradeep Generiwal, was the guest of honour on this occasion. He was honoured for his extensive contribution to promote skating to the international level.

The felicitation programme was followed by a cultural show. Children presented a dance item on “Made in India” which was a fusion of skating and traditional Indian dance. Equall y spectacular was a Punjabi dance item based on “Main Vaari Main Vaari Meri Samiyen”.

Seventeen Asian countries took part in this tournament, which was held at Jeonju city (South Korea). The Indian Women Roller Hockey team won the silver medal and the men’s team bagged the bronze medal for the country.

Sandeep scores crushing win

Sandeep Kochhar streamrolled Sanjay Kaushal and scored a one-sided victory at 54-5, 59-8 in the first round of the snooker tie of ongoing 5th Saurabh Khattar Memorial Billiards and Snooker Championship held at Chandigarh Club, here, today.

Seeded player Sandeep Chadha beat Gurminder Singh at 52-27, 73-37. Manu Singh was beaten by Deepinder Singh 22-63, 41-48. In another tie, Ashish Seth thrashed Nitin Vij by 63-24, 82-12. Ravi Mohan Singh beat Jaspal Singh score being 49-32, 66-48.

Second seed Sandeep Chadha was trounced by Pankaj Gulati 135-155.

Babuta carrom tourney

Bhagyashree and Palak Singla moved ahead in the third round of the sub-junior girls event in the first R.K. Babuta Memorial Prize Money Ranking Carrom Tournament which began here today at Saupin’s School, Sector 9, Panchkula.

The tournament is being organised by the Panchkula District Carrom Association.

Vikramjit, Arun impress

Impressing bowling spells by Vikramjit Malik (3 for 10) and Arun Tuli (3 for 14) helped ICL Certifications to thrash Himachal Cricket Club (HCC) by 8 wickets and enter in the semifinals of the UT League-cum-Knockout Cricket Tournament at Cricket Stadium, Sector 16 here today.

Pawan Kumar (27) was the top scorer of the HCC.

The second match between DAV Coaching Centre-8 and Arreson was hit by rain. It was decided by spin of coin which went in favour of DAV-8.

Brief Scores: HCC 79 all out in 22 overs (Pawan Kumar 27, Vikramjit 3 for 10, Arun 3 for 14.

ICLC 80 for 2 in 14.2 overs (Sidharth Sharma 38, Neeraj 24 n.o.).

Nagra to take part in seminar on varsity sports

Mr K.D.S. Nagra, chief national coach, ex-coordinator (Punjab) cum chief coach, Sports Authority of India, has been invited to a national seminar on “University Competitive Sports-2005” to be held at the University of Kashmir on May 25.

The seminar will be organised by the Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi, in collaboration with University of Kashmir, Srinagar.
