Orders issued to shift Arun Kumar
New DC R.K. Rao expected to join on May 30

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs today formally issued orders to shift the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Arun Kumar back to his parent cadre of Haryana and appointed Mr R.K. Rao, as the new Deputy Commissioner of Chandigarh.

Police crackdown on Old Panchkula colony
Protesters block Shimla highway
Panchkula, May 20
The Punjab police today swooped down on Bangala Colony at Old Panchkula and rounded up 35 persons. Residents of the colony, angry over the police action, blocked the Panchkula- Shimla National Highway at Old Panchkula for three hours.

Commercial ventures on roadsides to be allowed

Newspaper staff present demands
Chandigarh, May 20
On the call given by the Confederation of Newspaper and News Agency Employees Organisation, representatives of various associations of employees of newspapers based in the city today submitted a memorandum of demands to the UT Administrator for onward submission to the Labour Minister, New Delhi.

UT villages dependent on Admn for funds

None of the gram panchayats of 18 villages in the UT has been able to levy taxes to generate income. As a result of the resource crunch, the development works has been affected.

Protest against retrenchment

Employees of Punjab Small Industries and Export Corporation (PSIEC) from Punjab and Haryana participated in a massive protest rally held in front of Udyog Bhavan, Sector 17. The agitating employees were protesting against the management’s proposal of retrenchment of 600 employees.

PU may withdraw fee concession

Ban on construction activity at night

The Additional District Magistrate, Chandigarh, Mr I.S. Sandhu, has ordered a ban on construction activity from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m. in a house in Sector 16 here following a complaint by a 75-year-old senor citizen saying that noise because of night-time work affected his peace of mind.

Five booked for filing false case
Chandigarh, May 20
Five persons were booked last night by the local police for filing a false complaint of stabbing against a Sector 15 shopkeeper and his son after the submission of the report of an inquiry conducted by the CIA wing of the UT police. However, no arrests have been made so far.

A cancer support group “Sarthak”, comprising cancer patients, was launched at Fortis Hospital here. About 50 persons, including cancer patients and members of their families, attended an interactive session and narrated their experiences, giving hope to cancer patients.
