Fielding of overage players by PCA alleged
Mohali, May 20 “The Punjab Cricket Association legalises the participation of overage players by fielding them under different age groups in the inter-district cricket tournaments, thus, ruining the future of eligible young players,” alleged Sarbjeet Singh Kahlon, father of Vishwajeet Singh Kahlon, while addressing a press conference here, today. Vishwajeet plays in the under-17 category from Ludhiana district. According to the PCA officials, medical examination using x-ray was conducted by the PCA approved panel of doctors. This certificate holds precedence over all other proof of age certificates. In case, there is a difference in proof of age certificate and the medical report, the later is considered to be authentic. The eligibility of the player is determined on the basis of medical report. This amendment was carried out at a meeting of the association held on April 30, 2005. In the ongoing Punjab inter-district cricket meet, only players born after August 31, 1988, are entitled to participate in under-17 category. “The age of the player is calculated as from August 31. That means this year the players born only after August 31, 1988 were eligible to participate in U-17 category. How could the PCA’s esteemed panel of doctors distinguish a player born on August 31, 1988 from the one born on September 1, 1988, as the former is ineligible whereas the latter is eligible to play”, argues Sarbjeet Kahlon. He said the PCA continues to harp on the medical examination, in a way legalising the fielding of overage players in the so called ‘age group’ tournaments. Earlier, during the semifinal match between Patiala and Jalandhar, a protest was launched against Patiala for fielding overage players. The PCA came to the rescue of these overage players to avoid its image being tarnished. On top of it, Gagandeep Dhand was fielded as the captain of Ludhiana District under-17 team when his date of birth as per Municipal Corporation records (dated June 16, 1988) is March 18, 1988, and only players born after August 31, 1988, were eligible to participate in the tournament. It is pertinent to note that a copy of the said certificate is in the possession of both the PCA and the Ludhiana District Cricket Association. The testimony to this effect is that last year, during the inter-district under-15 tournament match between Punjab and J&K, he was found to be overage. Again, as per his school records, his date of birth is August 18, 1988. Despite being overage, he played in the under-15 cricket tournament. “I wrote to the general secretary, PCA, Mr M.P. Pandov in July last year too and even brought it to the notice of the president, PCA, Mr I.S. Bindra many times but in vain,” said Mr Sarbjeet Singh Kahlon. |
Cinder track being laid at Sector 7 Complex
Chandigarh, May 20 Instead, a cinder track is being laid at the complex, which is the oldest sports complex in the city. Mr S.K Joshi, Senior Coach, Sports Department, UT, said an eight-lane track was required to hold competitions and the complex in Sector 7 had the capacity to have seven lanes only. So, a synthetic track was not feasible here. But there was a proposal to lay it in the Sector 46 Sports Complex. The cinder track project will cost Rs 15 lakh and be completed it in four months, said Mr J.P.S. Sidhu, Joint Director Sports. Appreciating the decision, an athelete said that it would give a relief to the athletes who frequent to the stadium. The track had been in a state of neglect for the past eight years. Its clay had not been replaced since 1999. There were bumps in it and the water used to collect on the tracks. Tracks in this state of condition could be fatal to an athlete who could get a cramp or even a muscle pull. Mr Sidhu said the cinder track would be of excellent quality coal and clay, making it safe for the athletes. Mr N. Shashi, coach of the Sports Department, said there were plans to revamp the gymnasium also. Its wooden floor had already been replaced with cement floor. Landing platforms used by gymnasts were an important part of a modern gymnastic hall. Filling the platforms with correct density, shape and structure of the foam layers was essential and they were following the international standards in this regard,” Mr Shashi added. The complex is handicapped in the absence of a complete set of learning apparatus for sub-juniors and beginners in gymnastics. The problem is that there is no manufacturer in India for children’s learning apparatus. Importing these from overseas is a lengthy process and costly affair too, Mr Shashi said. |
