Save your skin from searing sun
Kuldip Bhatia

Ludhiana, May 17
With considerable rise in temperature in the region during the past few days has made going out in the sun an ordeal. Along with bearing the brunt of the scorching sun one has to face several kinds of skin problems too.

Information gathered by Ludhiana Tribune revealed that four to five cases of photo-contact dermatitis, caused due to the ultra-violet light (harmful sun rays) and cosmetics used by the people, are the main culprits, were being reported in the skin OPD of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) these days.

With further rise in temperature in the coming days, the number of such cases is expected to go up. These summer skin ailments, however, can be prevented by taking necessary precautions if directions of the doctors were followed to avoid ill-effects of hot weather.

Dr Alka Dogra, Professor and Head of the Department of Dermatology in the DMCH says, We have seen growing trend of using make up and cosmetics among women which poses a big threat to their skin in heat. Many women come to us and blame the quality of their lipstick for the blackening of their lips but the real reason is UV sun rays and dark color of lipstick as it absorbs more sunlight. Applying sunscreen on lips is very important and light coloured lipsticks should be used in this particular season.”

She further stated that during summer, cases of tanning due to over exposure to sun were quite common too. Besides this, people who frequently go for swimming, particularly in sunlight during late noon or late morning, got tanned skin. “If this problem occurs in kids, it takes two to three years to bring back the natural sheen of the skin. It is important to do swimming after sunset or in an indoor pool.

“Rashes and redness on wrists due to sweating because of wearing wrist watch is another common complaint. Antigens like nickel and chromium in artificial jewellery and accessories are leached out with sweat in summers, which penetrates the skin and causes allergy. Fungal infections are yet another common ailment. If whitish deposits appear on the body with redness and itching, a doctor should be consulted. Infection in between the toes called athlete’s foot and infection in groin called intertigo is also prevalent during these months.”

Giving some tips about protecting skin from the harmful effects of sun and sweat, Dr Dogra advised the people to wear light coloured cotton clothing with a loose fit because synthetic clothes tend to cause allergy and prickly heat. Light coloured minimal make up should be used and sweaty under-arms could be avoided by taking bath with soap at least twice a day and a deodorant could also be used.
