Project to equip slum children with vocational skills
Our Correspondent

Chandigarh, May 17
The Chandigarh Administration has launched a pilot project for providing work- related education and imparting skills to the children in the age group of six to 14 years in the schools which are catering to children living in slums and rehabilitation colonies. The project aims to give a vocational touch to the education.

The project is being launched on an experimental basis in the Government Girls High School, Sector 25, which is near a big slum colony with over 15000 families residing in it.  The project has received overwhelming response. Over 400 students have been enrolled under these courses and are pursuing them with great interest

Keeping in view the success of the experiment, the Administration now planto implement this project in other schools also.  These schools will impart skill training through Alternative Innovative Education Centres which serve as preparatory schools.

Though many facilities like free books, uniforms and meals are being provided to attract the children of poor and needy families to schools there are many parents who are reluctant to send them to schools.

Emphasis is on value education

True education is that which helps for the balanced and harmonious development of all aspects of human personality: physical, intellectual, spiritual, aesthetic and social and enable the person to achieve the ultimate aim i.e. truth. This is what Sherwood Convent School is trying to provide its students.

I express my gratitude to my staff and parents for their wholehearted cooperation and support in making the year a great success. I prey to the Almighty to bless all students, teachers, parents and well-wishers of the institution.

Children are the most precious assets of our country. They are the foundation of our society. I believe that every child has a right to a good start. Value education is emphasised upon so that every student grows with moral and ethical values.

We lay emphasis on the all-round development of every student. Discipline, dedication, punctuality and determination make the child confident and successful.

In our institution, we believe that a child needs to be accepted, liked, respected, trusted, encouraged, supported and motivated.

Education is not only on issue of literacy. It is the medium through which a person gains vision. It builds character and instills confidence in the students. It is essential that these children are given a free hand to mature and grow. I believe that all these children are full of energy and talent it is only for the teachers in the school to dig out the talent.
