PPCC list disappoints aspirants

The final list of the 209 members of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee has led to a lot of bitterness among several aspirants in Ludhiana. A number of prospective members have failed to make it to the final list.

  Protest against screening of ‘Jo Bole so Nihal’
Ludhiana, May 12
The screening of the controversial film “Jo Bole So Nihal”, which was released today at Shingar Cinema here, was stopped during the second show after hundreds of Sikhs protested against its screening. A number of Sikh organisations have carried out protests after rejecting a report of a committee formed by Akal Takht. The panel had given a clean chit to the movie. The police resorted to lathicharge and specifically targeted leaders of various groups who gathered outside the cinema hall raising slogans against the film makers.

Suicide victim’s kin demand justice
Khanna, May 13
Family members of Ramesh Kumar, who had allegedly committed suicide due to the threats and pressures of some police officials of the Machhiwara police station on May 7, have made a written complaint to the Governor of Punjab.

Rs 1.25 lakh looted outside a bank
Ludhiana, May 13
While the city police is yet to trace Rs 19 lakh robbery case accused two unidentified scooter-borne youths looted Rs 1.25 lakh from a farmer outside a bank in Miller Gunj today afternoon.

Residents threaten stir over level crossing issue
Ludhiana, May 13
Charging the district administration with causing a deliberate delay in finalising the site for putting up a manned level crossing at Bhai Himmat Singh Nagar on the Ludhiana-Dhuri railway line here, the joint action committee (JAC) of more than one dozen affected colonies has threatened to launch an agitation if the authorities fail to send their reply to the Northern Railway officials in this regard by May 31.

Major rail disaster averted
Ludhiana, May 13
Hundreds of rail passengers had a providential escape as a major train accident involving two passenger trains was averted here last night in the nick of time. According to sources, the passenger train that leaves for Hisar via Dhuri and Jakhal at 10 pm was put on the Ferozepore track by mistake due to the newly-introduced integrated route relay system.

Grahak Mitra counters inaugurated

The State Bank of Patiala has inaugurated Grahak Mitra counters at seven of its branches in the city. The counters were inaugurated by Deputy General Manager of the bank Mr R.P. Tayal.

Raid on illegal phone exchange
Ludhiana, May 13
A 20-member team comprising CBI sleuths, local BSNL officials and the police today busted an illegal telephone exchange on the Dhandra road which was being run with the help of a dish installed in a clandestine manner in a large house.

Primary teachers told to join training course
Mandi Gobindgarh, May 13
Under the order of the project Director, Sarv Sikhy Abhyan Authority Punjab, Mr Kanwaljeet Singh Principal, the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Fatehgarh Sahib has directed all Teachers working in Primary and upper Primary schools to join 20 days’ training course, commencing from June 1to June 24.

Implement PPB recommendations, say teachers
Ludhiana, May 13
Teacher led by Prof S.S. Hundal and Dr V.K. Tewari, have demanded the implementation of the recommendations of the Punjab Planning Board (PPB) regarding higher education which provides for pooling of 70 per cent of income of all aided (139) and unaided (about 60) colleges and government grant and give full salary to the staff along with real benefits.

Forum quashes power theft charges
Ludhiana, May 13
The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has quashed the demand of Rs 8,286 raised by the Punjab State Electricity Board on theft charges as the board officials failed to comply with the mandatory rules framed by the board itself.

Cultural show for cancer patients
Ludhiana, May 13
The Social Cause Welfare Society has decided to organise a cultural show for the welfare of cancer patients at Punjab Bhavan on May 14. The chairman of the society, Mr Ajay Arora, during a press conference, said the society was formed with the primary aim of providing financial help to poor cancer patients.
