Gangs of teenagers behind snatching incidents

The hopes of the city residents to get some respite from snatching incidents in the city with the arrest of a three-member gang of teenagers were dashed to the ground with reports that another gang of teenagers is quite active in the area and is committing one crime after the other at will.

Teachers protest against privatisation of education

Government school teachers of Fatehgarh Sahib held a rally at Government Secondary School here on today and raised slogans against the state and the Central governments for their policy of privatisation of government schools under the pretext of improvement of education standard in schools.

Afghan, Maldivian cops train at forensic lab
Ludhiana, May 12
Adding another feather to the cap of a newly setup Fingerprints and Forensic Laboratory in police lines here, five police officers each from Afghanistan and Maldives along with 22 others from the Northern states of India underwent a special training session at the state-of-the-art laboratory here.

Hike in sewerage bills to be ‘waived’

Increased amount in sewerage bills will be waived, said Ms Harbans Kaur Dullo, Parliamentary Secretary, during a press conference here today.

2 booked for cheating
Jagraon, May 12
Two persons, including a woman, allegedly cheated two persons by issuing fake certificates of appointment in police service and collected Rs 1,20,000 from the said persons. The local police has registered a case under Sections 406, 419, 420, 464, 468, 471 and 120B, IPC.

Authorities urged to register case of councillor’s death
Mandi Ahmedgarh, May 12
Various social and political organisations of the town and surrounding villages have urged the higher authorities to impress upon the police to register a murder case in connection with the death of Mr Shamsunder, a Councillor and a former vice-president of the local municipal council, whose body was found in a canal near here 10 days ago.

Govt college Prof gets UGC grant

The Postgraduate Department of Commerce, SCD Government College, added another feather to its cap in the cap when Prof Ashwani Bhalla of the department got a research grant from the UGC for undertaking a research project titled “Housing finance system in India — Problems, prospects and challenges” under the faculty improvement scheme of the UGC.

Change lifestyle to avoid breast cancer, says expert
Ludhiana, May 12
“In the coming years the incidence of breast cancer, which is the most common kind of cancer among women, will grow at a rapid pace in urban India due to increasing trend of women getting married at a late age. It is estimated that in developed countries like the USA, one out of every 10 women, suffers from breast cancer during her life time whereas in India the ratio was 1.30. Currently, Mumbai and Delhi metros are leading in the reported incidence of breast cancer.”

120 medicos donate blood for thalassaemics

To mark the ‘International Thalassaemic Day’, the Department of Transfusion Medicine and Punjab Thalassaemics’ Welfare Society (PTWS) of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) today jointly organised the sixth medicos voluntary blood donation camp on the hospital premises.

Mr R.S. Behl, honorary secretary, Ludhiana District Badminton Association (LDBA), has refuted the charges of misappropriation of funds levelled by association vice-president, Mohinder Kumar Chopra. In a press note issued here, while dismissing the charges, Mr Behl termed these as vague and baseless.
