Ring road to decongest UT-Kharar stretch
Chandigarh, May 12
To decongest the Chandigarh-Kharar section of National Highway No. 21, the Punjab Government has proposed an alternative ring road which would take off from near Sector 39 and join the highway ahead of Kharar, near Radiala village.

CBI traps Head Constable in police station

The CBI today trapped a Head Constable in Mani Majra police station for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 2000 on behalf of a woman police officer for registering a dowry case.

Juice seller becomes civil servant
Chandigarh, May 12

Hard work never goes unrewarded… this thought kept Manoj Kumar going for four long years. Finally his prayers have been answered. This son of a vegetable vendor, who funded his own education by selling juice on a rehri at Daddu Majra colony, has made it to the list of civil services-toppers by securing 393 rd rank.

2 more city boys make it to civil services

Two more students from the city have made it to the list of successful civil services aspirants. While Mandip Brar is a practising lawyer, Vikas Nair from Panchkula is an engineer from IIT, Delhi.

Married woman commits suicide
Chandigarh, May 12
A 26-year-old married woman of Dadu Majra colony ended her life by hanging at her residence, late last night. The brother of the deceased, who was living with her, told the police that there was no family dispute in the family.

Chain snatcher held
Chandigarh, May 12
An Ambala-based chain snatcher who was allegedly involved in an incident in the city in February was today arrested by the Sector 19 Police for allegedly possessing a countrymade pistol.

New DC against district status for Mohali

The new Ropar Deputy Commissioner, Mr H.I.S. Garewal, is not in favour of Mohali being given the status of a district.

80 rounded up during police searches

Searches were carried out by the police in various slum colonies here today to nab suspicious persons. As many as 80 persons were rounded up and later released after verification.

A truck and a car were reportedly stolen from the city, the police said here today.

Gang of three ‘cheats’ arrested
Chandigarh, May 12

A gang of three persons, including a woman, were today arrested for allegedly cheating at least 25 shopkeepers. The gang members allegedly used to purchase goods from shops and make payment by cheques. The cheques used to get dishonoured.

Marital discord between a couple has landed the husband in police lock-up for allegedly getting the signature of his wife forged on a house loan application of Rs 6.8 lakh.

CBI nabs Sec 17 railway booking clerk

The CBI today arrested a railway booking clerk in Sector 17 for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 for getting the work of a person done through a senior officer.

Intruders snatch chain

Two unidentified youths entered flat No 169 in Mansa Devi Complex and snatched a chain from Ms Mini Mishra, the flat owner, and fled from the scene after locking the owner inside a bathroom, here yesterday.

IG office employee arrested
Panchkula, May 12
The police has arrested an Assistant in the office of IG, Prisons, Haryana, Mr Ranvir Singh, for getting a fake identity card made so that he could travel free in state transport buses. As many as 11 parole warrants of jail inmates have also been found in his possession, though the office records show these as being dispatched.

Students take out pulse-polio awareness rallies

Chandigarh, May 12

Rallies to create awareness about pulse-polio were held in various city schools, today. The NSS unit of GMSSS-19, organised a one-day NSS camp on the school campus which began with a pulse-polio rally. This was flagged off by Ms Saroj Gupta, Principal of the school. About 100 NSS volunteers participated in the rally. A pulse polio rally was organised by GMSSS-18, which passed through the streets of the sector, creating awareness about the polio campaign to be held on May 15.
