Jammu, May 10
The Amarnath Shrine Board headed by the Governor, Lt-Gen S.K. Sinha (retd), and the Jammu and Kashmir Government are once again heading for the confrontation prior to the beginning of the annual pilgrimage. This time the state government has in an appeal before the High Court challenged the jurisdiction of the board that organises the pilgrimage.

The action of the state government has come following the high court’s judgement that the state government would not raise objections about the duration of pilgrimage.

The curtailment of the pilgrimage to one month last year by the state government was challenged by various organisations in the court. The Governor and the Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, had locked their horns over the duration of the pilgrimage. While the former wanted to stretch it to two months, the latter curtailed it to one month despite protests by various religious organisations.

This time also the issue has been raised just a month before the scheduled pilgrimage. It will begin on June 21 and end on August 19.

Several organisations and a few partners of the Mufti’s coalition have accused the state government of interfering in the religious affairs of Hindus. The Deputy Chief Minister, Mr Mangat Ram Sharma, has also trained his guns on the Mufti on this issue and made it clear that no curtailment in the duration of the pilgrimage will be allowed.

A former Chief Minister and National Conference leader, Dr Farooq Abdullah, has also accused the Mufti of interfering in the religious affairs of Hindus.

Dr Abdullah has said being a Muslim majority state, the steps being taken by the Mufti government will send a signal across the country that problems were being created for Hindus here.

Shortly after the high court passed its judgement, the state government has appealed against the order.

It is being pointed out by various organisations that the state government wanted to curtail the powers of the shrine board by challenging its jurisdiction. The state authorities were claiming that the jurisdiction of the shrine board was just around the periphery of the cave shrine and not on its three days long trek route from Pahalgam.

Following court’s orders, the shrine board has already sent two months notice to the state government regarding the duration of the pilgrimage. The shrine board has taken several steps to streamline the pilgramage on the line of the Vaishnodevi shrine, but this was apparently not to the liking of the authorities who wanted to maintain their control as thousands of pilgrims visit the shrine in the South Kashmir every year.

Infiltration from across LoC up
Our Correspondent

Jammu, May 10
Sudden step-up in the level of infiltration of militants from across the LoC has caused concern among the security agencies in Jammu and Kashmir.
A senior police officer today said that killing of about 35 infiltrators — 15 in Poonch, seven in Rajouri and 13 in Kupwara sector — by the security forces on the LoC during the past three weeks indicated that militants, equipped with sophisticated weapons and explosives, had started sneaking into the state.

Defence Ministry sources confirmed that the security forces had been asked to remain on the alert following reports that about 500 militants were camping on the launching pads across Poonch, Rajouri, Kupwara and Uri.

According to these sources, the police and security agencies have focused their attention on the Kanetar area in Poonch where a group of five infiltrators is said to have infiltrated from across the border.

The sources said that despite the fact that more than 10 infiltrators were killed in Kupwara recently, not many have been able to cross into Kashmir because the border routes were still under snow.

Eyewitness accounts said that though the border fence, damaged by snow, had been repaired in Poonch-Rajouri belt, there were several difficult mountain tracks, including Chabra Gali, Lohara Gali and Sabree Gali, which were used by the infiltrators. Besides, some areas, including Panjani nullah have not been fenced.

Official sources said that the security grid in these areas, vulnerable to ingress, had been strengthened.

Kishenganga: Gurez residents angry
Tribune News Service

Srinagar, May 10
Even as the Governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to resolve differences over Kishenganga hydle project in north Kashmir, the move is being resented by residents of Gurez, who would be dislocated for the project.

“There are 25 villages comprising 25,000 people, who will be affected” due to the construction of the hydle power project, said Nazir Gurezi, MLA representing the Gurez constituency in the state legislative Assembly. He threatened to resign from the House and launch an agitation in case the “true representatives” and the people of the area were not taken into confidence.

Mr Gurezi, National Conference MLA, said the plight of the people living in this far-flung area was not taken into consideration even as it remained cut off from the rest of the country for more than six months a year. He pointed out that no attention was given to the uplift of the people of the area, where most of the people were even today unaware of the modern facilities.

Modelling test of Anara: uncle denies reports

Jammu, May 10
A maternal uncle of former Miss Jammu Anara Gupta of the porno-CD case fame today denied reports that she had been approached by Bollywood producer and director Ram Gopal Verma for a modelling test.

“No test was conducted by film director Ram Gopal Verma on Anara in New Delhi. There is no such proposal at this time from Verma and the story is baseless and speculative,” Anara’s maternal uncle Sanjay Sachdeva said.

“We did not have any talks with the Bollywood director and there is no question of his flying from Mumbai to Delhi to conduct a test on Anara,” he added.

He said Verma had expressed his desire to cast Anara in one of his films some months back but from that time till now, there were no talks over the issue between Anara’s family and the Bollywood director.

He, however, said Anara would soon meet AICC chief Sonia Gandhi to apprise her of her plight at the hands of the Jammu and Kashmir police and added that she had already taken up her case with the National Human Rights Commission a few days ago. — PTI
