40 special kids hurt in mishap, shell-shocked
Panchkula, April 28
Forty schoolchildren, most of them physically or mentally challenged, were injured when their speeding school bus hit a tree while trying to avoid a head-on collision with a tractor-trailer. The accident took place near Ram Mandir on the Mansa Devi-Saketri road around 1.30 p.m.

Religious structures major encroachers

The largest chunk of land illegally occupied is to house gods and goddesses, contrary to an impression that only migrants have grabbed it. As much as 40.5 acres of land has been occupied by those who have built up religious structures across the city.

PU employee jumps to death in Sukhna

Brij Pal (33), a peon in the Registrar Office, Panjab University and a resident of Dadu Majra Colony, jumped to death in the Sukhna Lake this morning. A suicide note found from his clothes says that nobody was responsible for his extreme step.

Vigilance initiates probe against Ropar SSP, 2 others
Chandigarh, April 28
Almost 11 months after an NGO demanded a high-level probe against three police officials, including the Ropar SSP, Mr Surinder Pal Singh, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau has initiated an inquiry into the alleged amassing of wealth “disproportionate to their known sources of income”.

Residents show documents of houses outside lal dora

In reaction to the stand taken by the administration that the houses outside the lal dora in the UT villages were illegal, a number of residents living outside the lal dora have claimed that they were in possession of documents which reveal that these very houses were “approved” by the revenue authorities in the early 90s.

110 more jhuggis razed
Panchkula, April 28
Propelled by the success of yesterday’s anti-encroachment drive, Haryana Urban Development Authority continued to remove encroachments in different sectors today. Almost 110 jhuggis in Sectors 14 and 15 were razed.

Kandhola new MC Joint Commissioner
Chandigarh, April 28
Mr H.S. Kandhola, Joint Director (Admn), Government Medical College and Hospital, Chandigarh, will be the new Joint Commissioner of the municipal corporation. He replaces Mr Kulwant Kumar Kalson, who has been repatriated to his parent cadre of Haryana.

Sector 37 resident’s complaint to Rodrigues

A senior citizen, living in Sector 37, has complained to the UT Administrator General S.F. Rodrigues (retd) that his neighbour is constructing balconies in connivance with the enforcement staff.

Child dies in accident
Mohali, April 28
A one-and-a-half-year-old child was killed in an accident near Phase VI, here, this evening. It is learnt that the child, Sumit, was hit by a truck near the local Civil Hospital in the Chandigarh territory.

One killed, two hurt in mishaps
Panchkula, April 28
One person was killed and two others were seriously injured in three separate cases of road accidents today. Mukesh Kumar (24) was killed when his motor cycle had a head-on collision with a truck on the Zirakpur- Panchkula highway near Sector 20 this morning.

Probe into murder case
Chandigarh, April 28
The SSP today ordered an inquiry into the Sanjay murder case after the media highlighted the delay in registration of a case. In another development the IGP today ordered the transfer of the SHO of Sector 11 police station to police lines.

2 Rohtak men held for smuggling liquor
Chandigarh, April 28
The local police arrested two Rohtak-based inter-state liquor smugglers and impounded a mini-truck in which they were carrying 2,628 bottles of Indian made foreign liquor valuing Rs 3.94 lakh from a picket point here late last night.

Burglary attempt foiled

A burglar was caught red-handed in the Teachers Flats in the PGI this evening when the owner of the house returned. The burglar tried to jump from the top floor of the house but, did not find the heart to do so and was caught.

2 held on assault charge
Chandigarh, April 28
The police has arrested two persons for assaulting and threatening a resident of Dhanas village. Mr Kuldeep Singh of Dhanas village reported to the police that Bhag Singh, Jasbir Singh, Kulbir Singh, alias Lalla, all residents of the same village, assaulted and threatened him at his residence on Wednesday.

2 Panchkula schools under scanner

The Secondary Education Department, Haryana will issue show cause notice to two schools here, and 35 private senior secondary schools in Haryana, for withdrawal of recognition on account of their indulgence in acts of bogus enrolment, school leaving and transfer certificates during the year 2003-04 and 2004-05.

PU don to be conferred Vijay Shree Award
Chandigarh, April 28
Prof M.R. Aggarwal of the Department of Economics at Panjab University will be conferred with the Vijay Shree Award instituted by the India International Friendship Society. The prestigious award, which is given to a scholar having specialisation in social sciences, sciences and technology, will be presented to Professor Aggarwal at a ceremony in New Delhi on May 4.

Results not out, UGC aspirants in quandary

The non-declaration of the UGC NET results held in December 2004 has put the applicants for the forthcoming examination in a quandary. Unlike all previous years the UGC has not declared the results of the last exam till date even as the last date for submitting the applications for the next exam to be held in June is ending on April 29.

Engg students’ money not refunded: SOPU

The Students Organisation of Panjab University has alleged that the university is not refunding the complete amount paid by the 12 students of the University Institute of Engineering and Technology, who had later migrated to the Department of Chemical Engineering and Technology.

Man gets RI in cheque bounce case
Chandigarh, April 28
A local court yesterday awarded one-year rigorous imprisonment to a resident of the Mansa Devi Complex in Panchkula in a cheque bounce case. The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM), Mr Harbhajan Dass, held Rakesh Kumar guilty under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, and awarded the sentence besides imposing a fine of Rs 1,000 on him.

A holistic yog sadhna workshop for the doctors of the PGI concluded at the Community Centre, Sector 24, today. Corporate yoga trainer and naturopathy expert Raman Sharma conducted the four-month-long workshop from January to April.
