Mohali cop thrashed for ‘molesting’ woman
Ludhiana, April 12
A local 44-year-old-woman was allegedly molested by a Mohali police cop, while she was travelling in a Chandigarh-Ludhiana bus today. The cop was then reportedly bashed up by the passersby when they found him misbehaving with the woman.

Clash in PU exam date
Ludhiana, April 12
Students of BCom (part II) of Panjab University are in a quandary over the clash in examinations scheduled for April 23. The university had recently issued the fresh date for the examinations as the earlier exam, scheduled for April 2, had been postponed by the authorities following a boycott call given by the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers’ Union (PCCTU).

Doc gets notice for performing sex determination test
Raikot, April 12
The health authorities have served a show-cause notice on the Director of Lajjawati Jain Memorial Hospital for allegedly advising medical termination of pregnancy to a woman after performing a sex determination test with an ultrasound machine installed at his clinic. Dr Ramesh Jain, Director of the hospital, has, however, refuted the charges and alleged that the complainant had misguided the media by fabricating a story.

Gang of nickel thieves busted
Ludhiana, April 12

The district police today claimed to have busted a gang of nickel thieves with the arrest of its four members. They used to steal this expensive metal from factories. Addressing a press conference here today, Mr Gurpreet Singh Toor, SP (D), said the thieves had been identified as Shiv Kumar, alias Hira Lal from Bihar, Rakesh Kumar, alias Raju from Uttar Pradesh, Ram Kumar, alias Raj Kumar from Uttar Pradesh, and Ram Bahadur, alias Kishan Bahadur from Nepal.

Robbers’ gang busted, 9 held
Khanna, April 12
The Khanna police has busted an inter-state gang of robbers with the arrest of nine members, including the mastermind of the gang, Prem Kumar, brother of a former councillor. The police has seized weapons and impounded vehicles of the gang members, said the SSP, Khanna, Mr Pramod Ban today.

Man booked for raping employee
Ludhiana, April 12
The police has booked a local hosiery trader for allegedly raping a 22-year-old employee working in his factory. Following a complaint lodged by the victim, the Basti Jodhewal police has booked the hosiery trader of Ramesh Nagar on the Tibba Road under Sections 379 and 506 of the IPC.

Angry with the Punjab Urban Development and Planning Authority (PUDA) for not meeting the deadline for starting development works in the area, the residents of Sector 32-A have threatened to agitate if their long-pending demands were not met.

4 pc Vat on fasteners demanded
Ludhiana, April 12
Condemning imposition of 12.5 per cent value added tax (Vat) on fasteners, the Fastener Manufacturers Association of India has demanded these items to be included in 4 per cent slab.

The chain fast started by some councillors entered the seventh day today. Mr Sukhdev Singh Libra, MP from Ropar Parliament constituency, also joined the fast today.

DC asks SSP to book patwari for fraud
Ludhiana, April 12
Deputy Commissioner Anurag Verma has written to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) to register a case against a revenue patwari for committing a fraud by distorting the revenue record in favour of an industrial unit, M/s Arun Auto Industry.

Hero Cycles staff manhandle truck cleaner
Ludhiana, April 12
During the ongoing strike in Hero Cycles, a couple of labourers allegedly manhandled and injured a truck cleaner while preventing him from entering the factory premises today. Ajay was admitted to Civil Hospital here. The tiff intensified and the matter has now been handed over to the Labour Department.

Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh said today that he had great expectations from the new generation. He said there must not be any disparity between the privileged and underprivileged children and a balance needed to be maintained.

A nostalgic get-together at Sacred Heart school
Ludhiana, April 12
An old students' meet of Sacred Heart Convent Senior Secondary School was held on Sunday. The alumni who had passed out as far back as in 1974 had trooped into the school to meet former principals that included Corporate Manager and Provincial Superior Sister Nora, Sister Miriam, Sister Chantel and the present Principal Sister Maria Leena.

Engineering college holds sports meet
Ludhiana, April 12
Ludhiana College of Engineering and Technology (LCTE), Katani Kalan, near here organized its athletic and sports meet and annual prize distribution function today. Mr Rakesh Pandey, Minister of State for Science Technology and Industrial Training, was the chief guest. Earlier, Dr J.S. Sohal, Principal, inaugurated the meet.
